Joe Huinink March 20, 1932 – March 14, 2025 Josephus Theodorus Huinink
Joe told his last story and cracked his final joke at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on March 14, 2025 surrounded by love and his devoted family.
Joe was the longest living Huinink at almost 93. He was predeceased by his parents, 8 siblings, countless friends, and his wife of 61 years Ceacilia. He came to Canada from Holland in 1956.
Dad was genuine and authentically himself his entire life. Joe was an eternal optimist and curious, an important gift he gave all of us. He was a creative problem solver. His generation did not call a guy. They were the guy. He did electrical, plumbing, automotive repair, brick laying, poured concrete, shingled the roof, welded, laid tile and more. He was a lot of different things to a lot of different people but he was kind and generous to everyone. He gave freely of his skills, time, and energy to every neighbour, co-worker, family member, or stranger that needed a hand.
He loved his work and was proud of his contributions to Houdaille and Darlington OPG as a 3CS Engineer.
Joe deeply respected the earth and was in awe of mother nature. He lived the principles of the 7R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle, redesign, remake, rearrange, reimagine. This commitment, coupled with his tool and die and machinist skills led to many unique inventions including but not limited to; a bike with skis, a bird comfort station, a steam whistle door bell, and a chicken egg incubator. He was a talented artist, leaving family members with statues and carvings to treasure.
His daughters, Debbie, Audrey, Lorraine, and Jennifer and son in laws, Dan, Darren, Kirk, and Pierre have the admirable task of continuing to further his legacy. He was loved by his grandchildren Sarah (Derrick), Adam (Mallory), Sam (Stephanie), Madison (Jonathan), Kayleigh (Danny), Matt (Dan), and Mitchell. Great grandfather to Grayson and Brooks. His card partners and nieces Marg (Theo), Marlene, Betty (Steve), and Diane.
Gratitude and thanks to Dr. Harvey Williams, who worked hard to make sure we had our Dad for as long as possible. Thanks to all the good people at Lynde Creek Retirement Home. His time there was filled with kindness, learning and care.
He was a fiercely proud Canadian, proud to give more than he took from the country that gave him so much. He travelled coast to coast with his beloved brother Benny. He was the original Joe Canada. Elbows up!

Visitation; March 20, 2025 at 6pm to 8pm & March 21, 2025 at 1-2pm. Funeral to follow at 2pm. Cheer, beers and stories to follow at reception immediately following.
