Joseph Mihevc Obituary
At the remarkable age of 101, one week shy of his 102nd birthday, after a fulfilled life of many blessings, Joseph (Joze) Mihevc passed peacefully, surrounded by family on January 26, 2025. Predeceased by his wife of seventy-one years, Anica (Zorc). Dedicated father to Anne (Vladimir Zagar), Joe (Rosalee Bender), Mark (Delia) and predeceased by Emily (John Ulcar) and John (Rebecca Cunningham). Beloved by 14 grandchildren Rosemary, Dorothy (Brent), Julie (Mark), Justin (Lisa), Krista, Catherine, Christopher (Diana), Gregory (Ariana), Stephanie (Billy), Jesse, Sophie, Julia, David and Jonah, and by 13 great-grandchildren Megan, Andrew, Lauren, Wesley, Leah, Erin, Emmitt, Declan, Luka, Lucy, Yara, Labib and Senna, each an ongoing source of pride and joy. Joseph was the last surviving member of his Mihevc family, predeceased by his siblings Ivanka, Tone and Milka. Dearly missed by family and friends in Toronto, Cleveland and Slovenia.
Born to Apolonija and Anton in Hrusevje, Slovenia on February 3, 1923, Joseph was deeply connected to his Slovenian roots. Fleeing persecution, he lived in Austria for three years in a refugee camp and took the opportunity to come to Canada in 1948. He immediately embraced the hard work and determination needed to build a life centered around using and developing his skills to support a family, his church and community. A skilled mechanic and builder, he leaves behind a legacy that helped house his children and keep TTC buses running safely for 36 years. He also served as a credit committee member at the Slovenian credit union for 41 years. After his retirement, he spent many years as a Red Cross volunteer driving people to medical appointments. He will be remembered for his hard-working problem-solving mindset, his humour and his constant support and guidance. His gentle smile, singing and words of advice will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers who accompanied him in his final months.
All visitation will be at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church (739 Browns Line, Toronto) on Sunday, February 2, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Monday, February 3, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 3, 2025 followed by internment at Assumption Cemetery (6933 Tomken Rd., Mississauga). A reception will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made either to the FCJ Refugee Centre recognizing that Joseph had a special place in his heart for newcomers making their home in Canada. Alternatively, donations may also be made to Dom Lipa.
