Jonathan ‘s loved ones are saddened to announce his sudden passing on March 30, 2025, two days before his 68th birthday.
He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph Taylor Cunningham and Shirley Anne Cunningham (nee Stout). He is survived by his two beloved dogs, Fender and Gibson, whose names reflect his passion for guitars, and his close companions, Gulnara and May.
Jonathan joined the investment firm, Nesbitt Thomson in 1981, in the research department, and at the age of 23 became the youngest person to be a senior analyst. He went on the become the highest ranked analyst in Canada and the Director of Research. After 25 years with the same firm, Jonathan retired as Executive Vice President of the Bank of Montreal to pursue his other passions of music, photography, arts and philanthropy.
Jonathan was a proud alumnus of Carleton University, and supporter of its Sprott School of Business. In 1996, he established the Jonathan Stout Cunningham Award of Excellence in International Business, the Jonathan Stout Cunningham Award of Excellence in Securities Finance, and the Jonathan Stout Cunningham Award of Excellence in Information Systems. Jonathan had these awards revised in 2009 to honour his mother, Shirley, after she passed away.
A private service will be held to honour Jonathan’s life. Please contact Morley Bedford Funeral Home for details. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Carleton University.
