Obituary of John Michael Louis Bernard, CD
“To you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold high.’’
Sgt ‘’Ret’d’’ John (Jack) Micheal Louis Bernard, CD
18 February 1934 – 09 April 2025
It is with profound sadness that the family of John Bernard, CD (Papa Jack) announce his passing into the Creator’s hands on the 9th of April 2025, at his home in Geary, NB. Born and raised in the north end of Saint John, NB, he was the youngest son of Louis Edward Bernard and Catherine Cory (Connell) Bernard, and the beloved husband of the late Rhoda Marie (Carr) Bernard.
Jack served 28 years with the Canadian Armed Forces, enlisting on the 2nd of June 1952, with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps later re-named the Logistical Branch as a Mobile Support Equipment Operator. On completion of his basic & trades training at CFB Borden, Jack was assigned to the 38th Field Ambulance to prepare for deployment to Korea. He served in Korea from 1953-1954, and was a very proud Korean Veteran! At the invitation of the Korean Government Jack had the opportunity to return to Seoul, Korea, in April 2015, accompanied by his youngest son, Patrick. Jack returned to CFB Borden after the Korean conflict to await his next big adventure, which took him to Soest, Germany, where he served from 1955-1957. Ottawa was his next stop where he was afforded the opportunity to drive Members of Parliament, Federal Ministers, visiting World Leaders, various dignitaries and Royal visits. He was honored to have received the President John F. Kennedy Medal when “JFK” made his first state visit to Ottawa after assuming office. This is where Jack and Rhoda married in March of 1958, and started their family together, having 3 of their 4 children. In 1961, after the death of their 2nd son, Thomas, Jack was posted to CFB Gagetown. In June of 1966 until June 1967, Jack was deployed to Egypt on a United Nations peacekeeping mission. Upon returning to CFB Gagetown with the 3rd Service Battalion, Jack remained in Gagetown until 1977, serving in various inter-base postings and positions. In 1977, Jack was posted to CFB North Bay, Base Transportation Company and assigned the position as Chief dispatcher. In the fall of 1978, Jack decided it was time to return to New Brunswick and spent more time with the family! He retired in December of 1978. After his retirement Jack worked as the Oromocto hotel manager and auditor, and finally as an MDO 5 with Base Supply CFB Gagetown. Missing the military life he re-enlisted in 1979, with the reserve forces serving in the Royal New Brunswick Regiment (1RNBR) as their Transportation Officer, retiring in 1983, for the final time from the military.
Jack was very involved in community activities throughout his life. His passion and purpose were his family, supporting his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their various sports, education endeavors and/or career choices. He was a member of the Sipekne’Katik First Nation, a beloved Elder with the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council and The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, serving as a Board of Director on the Skigin-Elnoog Housing Corporation. “All in All”, Jack believed and was passionate about “Service to Others”, before self!
Left to carry the” Torch”, in Jack footsteps are his surviving children, daughter, Betty Ann Lavallee (Michel Lavallee), oldest son, Michael Bernard (Lorraine Augustine) and youngest son, Patrick Bernard; 7 grandchildren, Trevor Lavallee (Tara), Jack Bernard (Brandi), Michelle Bernard, Betty Ann Bernard, Patrick Bernard Jr., Dakota Bernard and Micheal Cook (Susan); 14 great grandchildren; his youngest and only remaining sibling, Donna Bernard-Richard (Louie Richard), as well as numerous nieces and nephews that he cherished!
Besides his wife, Rhoda, Jack was predeceased by his son, Thomas Albert Bernard in 1961; his parents; his brothers, Thomas and Herbert Bernard, as well as his sister Frances Bernard-Cormier.
Visitation will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago St. Oromocto, NB, on Thursday, April 17th, 2025, from 11 am – 1 pm. A memorial service will follow in the Chapel at 1 pm. Padre Shawn Daley will officiate. Interment will take place at the Oromocto Pioneer Gardens, with a reception at the Legion Oromocto Branch #93 from 3 pm -5 pm.
The family respectively request no flowers. In lieu, a donation to your local Legion or any Veterans organization would be appreciated.
