Obituary of John Joseph MacLean
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Joseph MacLean. Johnny passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in the early hours of April 20, 2025, with « his girls » by his side.
Born on January 1, 1943 to John-Hugh and Marjorie (MacArthur) MacLean in Antigonish, he was raised on Viewville Street alongside his 11 siblings. Johnny had a gift for fixing things, which he used throughout his life. He began his career at M&M Motors as a mechanic before opening his own shop, East End Transmission.
Johnny was introduced to Cavell in 1965 by his younger sister. Together they raised two daughters, Maria and Johneen, along with their honorary daughter, Janice Marie. They spent their early years on St. Mary’s Street before settling into their home on The Heights. Johnny enjoyed weekends on Brown’s Mountain where he shared stories, card games and the occasional beer with friends. A devoted hockey fan, he spent his winters on the ice and never missed the chance to cheer on his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. He and Cavell shared a love of baseball and they enjoyed watching the Blue Jays.
He continued to stay active in retirement by working as a school crossing guard, tending to his garden, practicing woodworking skills and never strayed away from working on vehicles. Johnny was known to frequent A&W for coffee and chat with friends. On occassion his grandchildren, and eventually, his great-grandchildren, would tag along to join the breakfast crew.
Most knew him as John J., but « Papa » was his favourite thing to be called. He was never more than a phone call away, whether his grandchildren were sick at school or needed a ride to a friend’s house. He was an exceptional cook and took pride in preparing holiday meals for those he loved. At their last family dinner together, Johnny and Cavell shared how grateful they were for the family they had made.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary « Cavell » (Livingston) MacLean; daughters Maria (Keith Durant) and Johneen (Lonny MacPherson); his grandchildren Andrea (Jeremy Cayea); John-Hugh (Caley Chisholm); Madelene (Linden Mattie); Noah (Rin Mullins); Roddy (Brooklyn Mann-Dixon); Kyle and Julia; four great-grandchildren Phoenix, Autumn, Dylan and Kieran; sisters Anita Camroux, Harrow, ON; Kay Trenholm, West River; Pauline Martell, Halifax; Bernadette (Alex) Delorey, Beaver Mountain; Brenda (Donnie) MacFarlane, Williams Point; Charlene Druhan, Ashdale; brother Roderick (Debbie), Rossfield; sisters-in-law Alma MacLean, Maryvale; Lauraine Doyle, Antigonish; and brothers-in-law Gerald MacKenzie, Toronto; Gerard Livingston, Bedford; David Livingston, Lower Sackville; as well as his many nieces and nephews.
Johnny is predeceased by his parents, John-Hugh and Marjorie MacLean; his brothers Everett and Bernard MacLean; sisters Ruby Boone and Marjorie Lynn MacKenzie; brothers-in-law Donnie Livingston, Angus Livingston, John Livingston, Chuck Camroux, Ron Boone, Benny Druhan and Wayne Trenholm.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Martha’s Dialysis unit as well as the Palliative Care Unit for their compassionate care of Johnny.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Friday, April 25 in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 26th in St. Ninian Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Antigonish CARE Van Society.
