Obituary of John Francis Canning
In Loving Memory of John Francis Canning
February 3, 1971 – April 9, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Francis Canning, age 54, of Enfield. John was a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished friend, and a cornerstone of his community. He lived a life marked by generosity, dedication, and a deep passion for helping others.
John grew up on a dairy farm just outside Shubenacadie alongside his parents and five siblings. His childhood was spent in the barn, where he developed a strong work ethic and assisted his father with the family’s racehorses.
The respected owner of Happy Harry’s, John, built more than just a successful business, he built a legacy. With unmatched dedication, John was the steady backbone of the company. He valued and supported his staff as well as cultivated strong relationships with suppliers and business partners across the industry. His impact on the business community will be felt for years to come.
John served as President of the Corridor Minor Baseball Association, where he dedicated significant time both on and off the field. His leadership and passion was inspiring, and he created many opportunities for kids to play, learn, and succeed.
In the wintertime, John could always be found on the snowmobile trails in Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Over the years, he logged thousands of miles, becoming a familiar face at nearly every major snowmobile stop in the region. His love for the sport was infectious, and the memories made on those snowy trails will be cherished forever by all who rode alongside him.
John was the beloved husband of Amanda (Mason) and the proud father of Kathryn and Benjamin Canning. He is survived by his siblings; Doug, Jimmy (Sharon), Colleen Eikelenboom, Sherry (Peter) Taylor; many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents; George Raymond and Doris Faye (Rockwell) Canning; Brother Allan Canning and Nephew John Edward Eikelenboom.
Above all, John was a man who showed up. He showed up for his family, his friends, and his community time and time again. He volunteered without hesitation and offered help without ever needing to be asked. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be held 2PM Friday April 25, 2025 in the Dome at the East Hants Sportsplex, Lantz, Rev. Dr. Jane Magrath officiating.
Family flowers only, donations may be directed to a Memorial Fund soon to be established in John’s name.
