It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of John “Allan” Forsyth, of Riverton, formerly of Thorburn. Our “Allie Oop” and “Gentle Giant”, as he was often affectionately referred to, left us peacefully surrounded by his loved ones at the Aberdeen Hospital on February 25, 2025 at the age of 81.
Born in New Glasgow on December 18th, 1943, Dad was the son of John (Jock) and Margaret Catherine (Kay) Forsyth, and was the oldest of several siblings.
Allan began his career by venturing out West working for Pepsi Cola but returned back to Pictou County and worked for the New Glasgow Fire Department as well as the New Glasgow Library. Following that, he spent the next 35 years working for N. R. Kenney Logging Ltd as a machine operator. He especially loved driving the Slasher and later Processor and in his later years, spent his time as the shop manager. He thought of Neil as another brother and spoke highly of him and his numerous co-workers over the years.
Dad was a true family man. He was a devoted husband of 46 years to Mom, who he lovingly called his “Flower”. There was never any doubt that she was the love of his life and put her above all else. He was also a kind and caring father and grandfather and took much pride in his family and our accomplishments.
In Dad’s retirement years, Sundays were spent watching his Nascar races and he continued to do so until the very end. He was also an avid reader, enjoyed listening and singing to his favorite songs, and was never shy to show off his dance skills if given the opportunity. He cherished his Saturday dates with Shane where they would spend the day together shopping and enjoying long conversations over coffee. He also looked forward to catching up with his friends at the local coffee shops.
Surviving are his loving wife, Ferne (MacDougall); son, Shane Allan Forsyth (Valerie), Westville; step-grandchildren, Laura Doucette and Sean Robson; daughter, Sasha (George) Vlemma, New Glasgow; grandchildren Adara & Ava Vlemma; siblings, Betty Clyburn, Pictou; Stuart “Bob” (Karen) Forsyth, Lethbridge, Alberta; Lynn Cooley, Thorburn; Scott (Edith), New Glasgow, Janice Harris (Sandy), Port Hawkesbury;, and several nieces and nephews.
Allan was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Douglas Forsyth, sister-in-law, Roma Forsyth, brothers-in-law, Wayne Clyburn, Douglas “Weasel” Cooley, & Kenneth (Kenny) Smith, father and mother-in-law, Clarence & Elizabeth MacDougall, and nephew Stephen Forsyth.
A heart felt thank you to the staff of the Aberdeen Hospital Fourth Floor, Surgery – the care and compassion you provided over the past months will not be forgotten. Dad remained so optimistic and positive until the very end and we know you all contributed to that. Also, a special thank you to the Palliative Care team for your comfort, support, and guidance.
Rest in peace Dad. You will be missed beyond measure but never forgotten.
Visitation will be held at H. W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow on Saturday, March 1st from 1 to 3 pm. Funeral services and reception will immediately follow with Charles MacPherson officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
If you wish, donations can be made in Dad’s memory to the Pictou County SPCA, First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, or the Canadian Cancer Society.
