John Tocher Obituary
With deep sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of John William Tocher, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, on May 12, 2025, at the age of 83. Born in Toronto, Ontario on July 22, 1941, and raised in Guelph, John was a proud Canadian with deep Scottish roots.
John was predeceased by his cherished parents, George and Irene Tocher, nephew David, and leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, and entrepreneurial spirit. He is lovingly remembered by his six children: Suzanne, Derek, twins Debbie & Danny (Lana), Trevor (Tanya), and Jodi, grandchildren Wade, Jack, and DJ, niece Angie, many, many friends along the way, as well as by his devoted brother Doug, who, despite living in Ontario, shared an unbreakable daily bond with John. Their relationship was a testament to brotherhood—only 14 months apart, and as close as ever until the very end. Doug made a special journey to Calgary to be by John’s side during his final days, a time that was profoundly meaningful to both.
John also shared his love with Wes Wright and Shawn McSwain Boomer who he considered his adopted sons, and for whom he had great love and care for, and of course John’s close friends Johnny and Sandy Kruse, who John loved beyond words. He was a great friend to many, loyal, generous, and wise. Those fortunate enough to know John will remember him not only for his strength and drive, but for the heart he wore on his sleeve. In his final days, he was never alone—surrounded by family and Jack Dog, who lay faithfully at his side, a quiet comfort in those tender moments.
In the mid-1960s, John moved west to Western Canada, where he planted deep roots, raised his family, and built several successful businesses. A lifelong entrepreneur, John held two patents and was never short on big ideas, determination, or the work ethic to make them reality. He was a fighter, tough in spirit and firm in his ways— »his way » was simply the way.
John’s love for his family was unwavering. He was devoted, loving, and fiercely proud of his children. He was also a gentleman, chivalrous and charismatic, known for his sharp sense of style, his love of a good story, and his gift for making people laugh. A talented dancer, a passionate cook, and a man who loved his food and of course tea – his way only. He had a ritual of scouring the newspaper for grocery sales and would stock the basement with enough supplies to last a year—a quirky habit that brought him joy and made everyone smile.
John’s 20 year loving friendship with Josephine was very special to John. John loved spending time with Jo’s family over the years and especially dancing at the Legion with Jo. Thank you for loving John, he loved you back.
The family would like to acknowledge the tremendous care and support from the LPN’s from CBI, who amazed us all with their incredible compassion for John. THANK YOU.
John’s life was made richer, especially in the last 2 years by the friendship and support of Dr. LeRoux, Konrad Chan, and a very special thank you to Barb Aspinall at South Campus.
John’s legacy lives on in his family, in the stories he told, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
Rest in peace, John. Your dance goes on in our hearts.
A celebration of life will be held on May 24, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Crossroads Church, 912 19 ST NE.
