With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Tom Wojtowicz, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. John passed away peacefully at home with his family, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories.
Born on March 28, 1936, in Alonsa, Manitoba, John’s early years were spent on a small homestead before his family moved to Diamond City, Alberta, in June of that same year. In 1942, they settled in Lethbridge, where John grew up alongside his siblings, creating memories filled with adventure and the occasional mischief.
John’s strong work ethic was evident from a young age. As a teenager, he worked at his father’s service station, Dieppe Service Station, pumping gas and handling mechanical work. He joined the Reserve Army at 18 and began working at Davidson Enman Lumber Company, where he built a remarkable 59-year career. His dedication to the company inspired several family members to follow in his footsteps.
In 1959, John met the love of his life, Charlotte Eisworth, at a Catholic Youth Organization in Calgary. They married on July 16, 1960, and together built a beautiful life in Calgary filled with family, laughter, and endless love.
John was a devoted father to his five children: Annette (Phil) Moline, Donna Engel, Carolyn (Randy) Lopez, John Cory Wojtowicz, and Daniel (Diego Aguilar) Wojtowicz. His love extended to his 10 grandchildren, Jacki-Lee (Michael Holcroft) Krsa, Michael (Lisa Reyes) Moline, Stephen (Mandy) Moline, Christoper (Doli) Lopez, Bradley Lopez, Scott (Brooke) Lopez, Jake (Mykayla Bergie) Engel, Jenna (Reo) Sapara, Colton Wojtowicz, Ava Wojtowicz and 21 great-grandchildren, Averi Holcroft, Jeslyn Krsa, Tristan Holcroft, Jillian Krsa, Jack Krsa, Jennifer Krsa, Juliana Krsa, Jordan Moline, Deanna Moline, Roco Reyes, Koby Buckner, Nicholas Buckner, Grayson Lopez, Cambria Lopez, Lukas Lopez, Draygo Lopez, Sawyer Lopez, Westin Lopez, Logan Lopez, Madilynn Lopez and Bella Lopez each of whom he adored.
John is also survived by his sister, Helen (George) Dolbak, sister-in law, Martha Wojtowicz, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. John was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Maria Wojtowicz, and brothers Joseph, Stanley, Adam, Eugene, Anthony, Edward, Frank, and Carl.
A passionate sports fan, John was a lifelong supporter of the Calgary Stampeders and Calgary Flames, holding season tickets for decades. He loved playing soccer, bowling, curling, baseball and horseshoes at family gatherings. He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping trips across Canada and the U.S. with family and friends.
John’s adventurous spirit took him on many travels, from road trips across North America to family vacations in the Maritimes, Niagara Falls, Australia, Italy, and beyond. As a Fourth Degree member and one of the founders of Council 4878, he was a long time and proud member of the Knights of Columbus, where he dedicated himself to community service, fundraising, and leadership.
In his later years, John found joy in perfecting his homemade beef jerky and BBQ sauce, sharing his culinary creations with family and friends.
John’s kindness, humour, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed. His legacy lives on in the stories, traditions, and values he passed down.
Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Cecilia’s Church (321 90 Ave SE, Calgary, AB) on February 25th, 2025, 6:00 pm viewing and 7:00 pm prayers.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Cecilia’s Church on February 26th, 2025,10:00 am viewing and 11:00 am funeral services begin. Reception to follow in St. Cecilia’s Hall and Graveside Service to follow thereafter at Eden Brook Cemetery (24223 Township Rd 242, Calgary, AB).
We want to express our deepest gratitude to the caregivers who provided our dad with such kindness, compassion, and support over the years and in his final days – your care meant the world to him and our family.
