John (PW) Avery Obituary
When John (PW) Avery passed away on April 6, 2025 he left behind his son Daren, his companion Gaamominik (Karen Watts) and many family and friends. For all who knew him, his passing is marked by an empty space in one’s heart, wrapped by many cherished memories. He leaves behind his mother, Stella Avery, brother Bob (Susan), Joanne (Graham) and Brenda (John). He was a cherished uncle of Elliott, Suzie, Benet, Tara, Denise and Mark. He will be missed by his great niece Victoria and great nephew Ethan. He will now be reunited with his father Raymond Avery, brothers Danny (Yvonne) and Wayne (Anne) as well as his sisters, Kimberly and Susan Avery. For everyone who knew him they will remember him as a kind-hearted man who treated everybody in the same way no matter if they were rich or poor, homeless or struggling with addictions. To him, everyone deserved to be treated with respect. John’s love for dogs made his apartment porch a favourite stop for dog-owners, who could count on dog biscuits and a quick chat. His generosity extended past the people who lived in his building, as many will attest, John (PW) was often seen giving someone a smoke in the park or spare change at the grocery store – he would gladly give the shirt off his back, if someone needed it. John (PW) had many attributes and skills that he gained over his lifetime including: First Aid/CPR, tickets for operation of heavy machinery and other skills that allowed him to work in confined spaces, on fire watches or in a construction site. He also acquired a Custom Orthotic Technician/ Fitter diploma (George Brown College) and a diploma in Business Administration – Materials Management & Distribution which came in handy when he worked at Charlotte Products, in the shipping/receiving department.
These last few years have been very challenging for John (PW) especially after his back surgery in Kingston. He had multiple strokes and other health complications, but nurses and doctors at PRHC took care of him in a compassionate and genuine way. When he returned home, there were many social workers, PSWs and other health care professionals who were invaluable to him at the end of his life. We are forever grateful for their kindness, tolerance and accommodations. A special thank you to Joe (PSW), the women in the neighbourhood who generously donated food such as pre-made meals, fresh bread (which was his favourite) and other treats; their kindness helped sustain John (PW) in those final days when he was too sick to cook for himself. A special mentioned goes to those who called and checked on him on a regular basis: Pearl Whittaker, Michelle Avery, Audrey and John (his namesake), Deb & Fred, and of course his mother Stella, siblings and cousins all over Ontario and Nova Scotia. He will be especially missed by his son, Daren who witnessed his father’s declining health but knew he could count on him for sports monologues and driving tips. Everyone, including Daren, knew that he was his pride and joy and the love they shared was very special. No doubt Daren’s admiration for his “papa” will forever be tied with memories of their talks and time alone. Finally, to Gaamominik (Karen) who loved him as a partner, confidant and friend; her strength and love will extend past this world and into the next.
While it was difficult to let John (PW) go to the Spirit World, we knew that in doing so, he would be leaving the pain and suffering behind. We all prayed for him and helped whenever we could. We will all carry fond memories, tons of laughter, stories, and anecdotes that were a testament of his life’s journey. May he find peace and comfort in the Afterlife; surrounded by friends and family, most-likely a dog – a cold brew in one hand and a smoke in the other. You will be missed John (PW) but you will never be forgotten!
A Celebration of Life will be held at the HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE, 2510 Bensfort Rd., Peterborough on Wednesday, June 4th 2025 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Donations to the Food Bank or Stroke Unit at the PRHC would be greatly appreciated. After a brief visit, at Highland Park, there will be a procession to John’s (PW) final resting place, Rosemount Gardens in the “New Memories Garden”. We hope you can join us for John’s (PW) Celebration of Life and Interment (Family).
