John Lemme Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we share the loss of John Lemme, who left us much earlier than anticipated on January 18th, 2025 in Bracebridge, Ontario at the age of 68. He is survived by his wife, Mary-Jo (nee Midgley), his daughters, Moira (Kyle), Melissa (Stephanie), and Michelle, and his beloved grandchildren, Nathaniel and Lucas. He also leaves behind his siblings, Christopher (Michelle), Michael (Debra), and Florence Delkus (nee Lemme), along with hundreds of friends and extended family. He is pre-deceased by his parents Emily & Victor Lemme, and his brother Louis.
John lived an incredible life full of music, love, and meaningful friendships. After a 6-month battle with cancer, the disease metastasized and lead to his sudden departure from us within 3 short weeks. In his last hours he thanked MJ for the delicious lunch and asked, “Where is the party tonight?” We like to believe he was invited to a special concert in the sky, one that only pauses for cat naps and a cold beer and includes all his cherished friends, family, and dogs who have gone before him.
John was born on May 3rd, 1956 in Etobicoke, Ontario. By the time he reached high school, his affection for music was clear and unwavering. He was the driving force behind the popular “10-Gallon Fat” folk festival at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute. Of course also taking to the stage he quickly made a name for himself across his high school campus. He continued performing in his early adult life, spending most Friday nights during the ski season singing at the Horseshoe Tavern at Horseshoe Valley Ski Resort which he loved.
He met Mary-Jo in 1984 and it didn’t take him long to know he better act quick and marry this woman, tying the knot the very next year in 1985; he of course sang for his bride and guests that day too! John and MJ would have been celebrating their 40th Wedding Anniversary in August of this year.
John and MJ began their married life in Newmarket, Ontario, spending 35 of those years on Wildwood Drive, and eventually retiring to Bracebridge, Ontario in 2023. Neighbours throughout the years could always count on a hello from John while he weeded the lawn and walked the beloved family dogs (Maggie, Lucy and finally Penny). You did not have to know John to be eligible for a friendly “hello” when he was out for a walk; a notion this world will miss dearly. The girls joined them in 89’, 92’ and 94’ and the family was complete. The summers for many years were spent at Lemme Land on Mile Island, Morrison Lake, where John’s greetings to everyone came from the boat instead of the sidewalk. To both John and MJ’s credit, the home and the cottage were places that anyone who visited felt warm and welcome, they were usually offered some Lemme Estates Wine or an “Ice Cold Bud Light” (Carling light in the 90’s), as well as some sort of tasty treat. Family gatherings were centered around food and the Lemme’s were known for it.
Beginning his career in corporate sales, John quickly pivoted and opened his own business in web design where he could work from home and get all the family time he wanted. As his girls got older, he found his way back to his deep love of music and began to focus on recording, writing, and performing again. His return to music led him to so many friendships, The Woods music camp, and countless opportunities to touch people’s lives with his gift of song. Perhaps his most cherished musical performances though, were when he shared the stage with his daughters at Music in the Park or Musical Desserts; John was so proud of his girls and it’s clear he passed along his love and talent of music to all three.
John will be missed so deeply and leaves a huge void in the family’s life, events, and celebrations. He will be missed by cherished friends whom he loved dearly and the music community that meant so much to him. And finally, he will be missed by his pooch, Penny Lane, who will forever be waiting at the door for his return.
We have no words to express the gratitude we have for the team at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge, where John spent his final hours and a few other emergent visits; the care he received, especially on January 18th, was unmatched. As well, we would like to thank the incredible nurses and Dr. Jindal at the chemotherapy centre at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital Site, where he had his 4 chemo infusions and other care. They were full of compassion and always available to take our calls and answer our questions.
In honour of John, please consider making a donation in his name to one of the Muskoka hospitals.
