John Gattens, a cherished patriarch, esteemed colleague, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, in Edmonton, AB, at the age of 87. Born on June 24, 1938, in Manchester, England, John’s journey was marked by his selfless nature, loving heart, and generous spirit.
John’s life was rich with the love of family. He is survived by his devoted sons, Mark (Norma) and John (Sally); his adored grandchildren, Kaeli (Stephen), Rory (Amy), Elder (Melissa), Joshua (Ewa), and Christopher (Emma); and his treasured great-grandchildren, Bowen, Alessandro, Santino, and Matteo. His legacy continues through his brother Graham (Mikki), their children Kristen (Andrew) and Cameron (Jacqueline), and their daughter Emmy; as well as his sister Jean and her children, Linda, Dean, and Dale. His life was a tapestry of connections, including numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives who will carry forward his memory with love. John was predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret Gattens; his wife Molly; and his brother-in-law, Charlie.
John’s professional life was as impactful as his personal one. His work ethic and dedication were evident in his significant contributions to the construction industry. He was instrumental in all three phases of building the West Edmonton Mall, Eaton’s Centre, and Canada Place. These landmarks stand as a testament to John’s vision and commitment to excellence. His involvement in these projects not only shaped the skyline but also the community, as he was an active participant in various associations within his field.
Beyond his professional achievements, John’s interests painted the picture of a man who embraced life with enthusiasm. An avid golfer, he could often be found on the greens, relishing the game and the companionship of fellow enthusiasts. His passion for CFL Football was unmatched, and he enjoyed the camaraderie and excitement that came with each game. Swimming was not just a pastime but a way for John to connect with a sense of tranquility and well-being.
John Gattens lived a life that exemplified the values he held dear. His selflessness was evident in the way he put others before himself, always ready to lend a hand or offer support. His loving nature was the cornerstone of his family, creating a warm and welcoming home where all were cherished. His generosity extended beyond his family, touching the lives of friends and colleagues alike.
As we bid farewell to John, we celebrate a life well-lived, a legacy of love, and the enduring impact of a man who made the world a better place simply by being in it. John Gattens will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 10:00 am in St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail NW, Edmonton.
Memorial donations in John’s name may be made to Alberta Cancer Foundation or to Heart & Stroke Foundation
