John’s Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of John David McShane announces his passing, surrounded by loved ones, at the Upper River Valley Hospital near Woodstock, NB, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
John was born in Sydney, NS, on March 1, 1956, to Rita (Doyle) and Walter McShane. John is survived by his wife, Pauline Martin; his beloved children, Alexi and Emma McShane; and his loyal canine companion, Sam. He is also survived by two sisters, Cathy Johnston and Lidwina Taylor (John); four brothers, Leonard (Louise), Brian (Carolyn Pitcher), Brendan (Gloria), and Michael (Lynn); as well as many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, his brother-in-law, Dr. Joe Johnston, and his nephew, Bradley McShane.
John moved to Riverview, NB, at the age of two and graduated from Riverview High School in 1974. He went on to attend St. Francis Xavier University, where he graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Business Administration.
John lived a life full of adventure, with countless stories to share. From his time working in the High Arctic to fond memories of university, world travels with his family, and countless road trips, his life was rich with experiences. He cherished the concerts he attended with some of his favourite people, each moment adding to the tapestry of a life well-lived.
Most of John’s life was spent in St. Margaret’s Bay, NS, where he began his career in the marine industry as a mussel farmer. He later built his business, Cold Water Docks Plus, with unwavering dedication. He took immense pride in his work, which is a true reflection of the commitment, determination, and passion he poured into everything he did.
John’s love for the outdoors was boundless—whether boating, fishing, snowmobiling, or spending time in his tractors and excavators, he was always in his element. He especially treasured these moments with family and friends, who he held close to his heart. No matter where he was or what he was doing, there was always rock and roll music playing in the background, a soundtrack to his joy.
In the final months of his life, John found peace and comfort at “the cabin”, which he considered to be his true happy place. There, surrounded by the natural beauty he loved, he lived life to the fullest, enjoying every moment with family and friends until the very end.
His infectious energy and sense of humour left a lasting impression on everyone lucky enough to cross his path. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Scott Funeral Home & Crematorium in Woodstock, NB. A funeral service will be held at a later date. Donations to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
