January 16, 1928 – February 3, 2025
Joop was born in Amsterdam North, The Netherlands, to Piet and Marie. He was the 7th child of 9: Piet, Frans, Guus, Hugo, Wim, Jetta, Joop, Miep and Jacques. His father was an electrician and his mother was at home (Joop acknowledged that was a full-time job!). Joop followed in his father’s footsteps and also trained as an electrician. Joop and Corrie (Cornelia Stam- a trained nurse) were married in April 1958. They considered their options and decided to immigrate to Canada. They had friends in Toronto who had immigrated earlier and Joop and Corrie were welcome to stay with them until they got on their feet. They took a boat to Montreal and then travelled by train to Toronto. After a number of months, both Joop and Corrie were hired by a Senator and his wife who lived in Toronto. There were three children in the family – two boys and a girl. Joop said that he and Corrie had their own apartment in the home. Corrie’s primary responsibilities were to prepared meals and look after the home. Joop helped with food service and clean up as well as other tasks. Joop said that the Senator decided that Joop would be his driver and set up lessons for him. Joop indicated that once he had his licence, he drove the Senator to work every day. After approximately 5 years, Joop and Corrie moved to Markham and bought their first home. Joop explained that his credentials as an electrician were not accepted in Canada so he found employment in a bowling alley. Ultimately he had his own business and travelled throughout Canada servicing bowling lanes. Corrie was employed intermittently as a nurse but they subsequently decided that she would help Joop with his business. While living in Markham Corrie discovered and honed her artistic skills. There are many beautiful examples of Corrie’s work in their home – tapestry, embroidery, needlepoint, most of which Corrie designed herself. Corrie and Joop also discovered Scottish dancing and travelled across Canada to attend events. They had great fun together. They travelled frequently – often back to the Netherlands to visit friends and family, as well as Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Morocco, Denmark, Curacao and Cuba to name a few. Even after Corrie died in 2007, Joop continued to make trips back to the Netherlands. He kept in touch with friends and relatives – most significantly his niece (Francisca) and her husband (Jan) and his sister (Miep). He also joined a bowling league which he thoroughly enjoyed. Joop continued bowling and driving until recent months. He enjoyed his Dutch crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. We all celebrated his 97th birthday on January 16th with dinner out and a gathering of friends at home. Joop passed away suddenly at home on February 3rd. He lived a long and full life. He will be missed. The family wishes to thank Karen and Betty Anne for their ongoing care and support, particularly over the past year. There will be no service as requested by Joop and the family.
