Obituary of Joan Pole
POLE, Joan – Age 91 of Halifax.
On December 15, 1933, Elsie Cain gave birth in Toronto, Ontario, unassisted (a nod to the strength of spirit Joan was to inherit) to Joan Cain. On January 19, 2025 at 3:30 a.m, Joan Pole passed away quietly with family by her side. Joan and her brother, Tom Cain, are the last surviving of the nine children of Elsie and James Cain.
During her 91 years, Joan experinced a number of major life events: a world war, the invention of computers, and parts of two centuries just to name a few. She also enjoyed a loving marriage of 55 years to Gordon Pole; a man who was a partner and a best friend. Gordon and Joan had three children, Daniel (Dec 3, 1952), Janiece (August 7, 1960) and Carrie (December 29, 1964). Joan was a wonderful mother who provided a stable and warm home during many moves and changes in the family’s lives; including living in Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Although motherhood brought great joy, Joan found true bliss in being a grandmother. She had six grandchildren, Jenelle, Larisa, Corrinna, Meagan, Ceilidh and two great granddaughters, Neila and Kiersten who were the light of her life.
Joan found a true purpose when she and her husband were baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1955 in New York. During her 72 year career as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, she made many dear friends and experienced the joy helping others learn about Jehovah. All three of her children became full time ministers of Jehovah’s Witnesses at different times in their lives, due largely to Joan’s example of spirituality and faith.
Later in life, Gordon and Joan became avid travelers. They took trips through the United States, Canada, Britain, Wales, France, Italy, as well as many cruises. The travel bought such joy that at the time of Gordon’s death well into their 70’s, they were still planning their next trip. At 78 years old, Joan and her son travelled to Israel where she literally climbed mountains touring biblical sites. Just a few months before her passing, she was making notes of highlights of that trip.
As with any life there were tragedies. The loss of her first grandchild, Jennelle, brought Joan great sorrow. The death of her first daughter, Janiece, in 1996 tore a hole in Joan’s heart that will not be filled until they are reunited in God’s New World. This was a hope that was real to Joan. The death of her husband in a car accident in 2005 was life changing. Although she survived the accident, Joan received critical injuries including a head injury that resulted in limitations to her travel and other activities. Instead of letting this determine her life, she simply redirected her energies into making new friends and participating in other activities.
Daniel and his wife Stella, Carrie and her husband Christopher Rozee, and Joan’s many grandchildren are heart broken to say goodbye to their mom and grandmother. However, they know that she is safe in Jehovah’s memory and that they will see her and other lost loved ones again very soon, in God’s New World.
Arrangements have been entrusted to J Albert Walker Funeral Home at 149 Herring Cove Road Halfiax. In keeping with Joan’s wishes, no vistation or funeral service will be taking place.
