Obituary of Joanne Newton
Joanne, a woman of incredible wit, intelligence, and fierce independence, passed from this realm
on January 25, 2025.
Joanne was an exceptional mother, raising five children with immense love and care, encouraging their independence and teaching them to question the world around them. She instilled in them the importance of thinking for themselves, empathizing with others, seeing beyond their own perspectives. She ensured that their lives were filled with love, joy, and unforgettable traditions, from homemade birthday cakes to cherished holiday celebrations.. She was a forward thinker, teaching her children that religion could often be used as a tool for control.
A voracious reader, Joanne was a fixture at her local library, so much so that she was on a firstnamevbasis with the librarians and helped keep the circulation up at the local branch. She was so passionate about books that even during the isolation of COVID, they delivered her books, which she absolutely adored. With a love for antiques, oriental treasures, and all things beautiful, she was known for her love of Persian rugs and her collection of Navajo and Hopi jewelry. If you ever found something which you both liked while antiquing, you’d best watch out—she’d snatch it from you in a heartbeat. She was the best-dressed in any room, thanks to her keen eye for fashion.
As someone who believed in equality long before it was widely accepted, Joanne was angry about gender-restricted roles. She had longed to be a doctor, but was told that that position was only for men, leading her to become a nurse instead, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing— an experience that fueled her lifelong passion for challenging gender expectations. As a mother, she ensured her children had access to a wide range of toys and activities, never forcing them into any traditional gender roles. At 58, she returned to school to earn a Master’s degree in Social Work, shifting her career path into social work. She volunteered on the board of Big Brothers and, later, on the board of the Queensway-Carleton where she successfully advocated for mandatory screening for abuse in the Emergency Department.
Fiercely intelligent, stubborn, and surrounded by beauty, Joanne lived a life of uncompromising authenticity, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and a relentless pursuit of justice. She was a totally awesome mother and we miss her.
From the bottom of our hearts we send our sincere thanks to the staff of the Rosamond Wing at Almonte General Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of our Mum. To the librarians at the Pakenham library, thank you for the books, the conversations and the friendships. To the wider Pakenham community, including the Community Paramedic Outreach Program and the Carebridge grocery delivery service volunteers, thank you for all the support and kindnesses over the years: you all made a huge difference in Mum’s well being.
