With great sadness, the family of Joan Mildred Sampson (Deon) announce her passing on February 18, 2025. She was born July 21, 1942, in Beech Hill, Antigonish County, NS. Joan was raised on a farm with 7 siblings where she learned the value of hard work and developed a strong work ethic.
Joan is survived by her daughter Karen Malone (Beverly) and son Keith Sampson, two grandchildren Samantha (Ian) and Kali Risteen (Brady), two great-grandchildren Lucas and Leah, and two sisters Rose Paiero and Shirley Rogers, and many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband Brenton, three sisters Lumina, Margaret and Claire, two brothers Edmund and Joseph, and parents Clarence Deon and Mildred (Cormier).
Leaving home at 16 to work at Moirs Chocolate Factory in Halifax, Joan met her husband, eventually moved to Antigonish, and raised her family. She worked housekeeping jobs in the town privately and at the R.K. MacDonald guest home and St Martha Hospital.
Joan and family moved to Fox Island, Guysborough Co. In 1980 where she worked at Eastern Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1997. It is here where she regained her love of gardening to find great joy and pride in her yard, from her flower beds to her lush lawn, she valued the rewards of her hard work.
She took great pride in her home, inside and out. She loved the million-dollar view of Chedabucto Bay, the ships, lobster boats, and the view of Cape Breton. Joan enjoyed spectacular drives along the shore with her son, Kinsman radio bingo, a good game of crib, time with neighbors and friends, and of course crocheting!
In her later years, Joan moved to NB with her daughter and family. She loved the company of her grandchildren and always had an extra cheesie to share!
She will rest alongside her husband at St Ninians Parish Cemetery, a graveside service will take place at a later date.
Special thank you to the staff of Wauklehegan Manor, McAdam NB for their professional care and for ensuring her comfort in her final years. Donations can be made to the Wauklehegan Manor Solarium Fund. Contact admin@wauklehegan.com.
