Jeanette Garneau Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jeanette Garneau (née Oleksiw) at the age of 85, on December 23, 2024, at the Edson Hospital, with her family by her side.
Jeanette was born on November 25, 1939, in Mackay, Alberta, and was the middle child in a family of three siblings, with her older brother Bill Oleksiw and her younger sister Stella Dowd (Oleksiw).
Jeanette attended grade school and high school at the Red Brick School in Edson. During her youth, she worked part-time at the local theater and at the prestigious Jasper Park Lodge. After high school, Jeanette pursued further education at McTavish Business College, where she refined her administrative skills. She worked at Aberhart Memorial Hospital in administration from 1959-1963. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Ed Garneau, on a blind date. She married the love of her life, Ed, on September 29, 1962. Together, they lived in Edmonton, Legal, and Morinville before settling in Edson in 1975, where they raised their family.
In addition to her role as a devoted wife and mother, Jeanette worked in various positions throughout her life. She ran a dairy bar in Granada, worked as a cashier at the Co-op grocery store, and later as a teller at the Credit Union in Legal. Once in Edson, she continued to serve her community, working at Canada Post, and in grocery at Tom Boy, Buy Rite and IGA.
Over the course of her life, Jeanette embraced her passions for cooking, baking, canning, sewing and spending time with family and friends. She was also an avid outdoorswoman, enjoying fishing and hunting prairie chickens with Ed.
Jeanette was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Mary Oleksiw, her brother Bill, and her sister Stella. She is lovingly remembered by her three daughters, Jackie (Paul) Grant, Yvette (Wayne) Iwaschuk, and Louise (Keith) Bills, as well as her grandchildren Kara, Travis, Marc, Amanda, Kelsey, Kenzie, and Kaylan. She will also be deeply missed by her great-grandchildren, Georgia, Ellis, Ella, and Oliver.
Jeanette is survived by her sisters-in-law Marion Mckenzie, Annette Barynowski, Yvonne Garneau and her brothers-in-law Leo (Mariette), Norm (Joanne), and Rene (Tammy) Garneau, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Jeanette will be remembered for her loving spirit, her strong sense of family, and her warmth that touched all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jeanette’s memory to Parkland Lodge or to a charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to sincerely thank all the staff at the Edson Healthcare Centre and Parkland Lodge for always taking such good care of our mom.
Respecting Jeanette’s wishes, a small family service will be held at a later date.
