Residents of the Eastport Peninsula mourn the loss of a central figure and dedicated volunteer in the local music scene.
Musician and guitarist, Jared “Jerry” Squire, passed away on May 31, 2025, at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre in Gander.
He is predeceased by his mom and dad Violet and Samson Squire; sister Alice; brother Clyde; and nephew Gordon.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 55 years, Julia; brothers Robert (Karen), and William; sisters Christine and Doris Anne; sister-in-law Audrey (Daniel); brother-in-law George Beck; nephews Tyler and Robert-Paul; nieces Donna Lynn, Lori, Hannah; great-nephews Zack and Isaiah.
Whenever there was a need for music Jerry was there to respond. For almost 30 years, Jerry was a musician for the EASTPEN PLAYERS concerts, dinner theatres, and numerous community events:
Christmas Pageant
Remembrance Day Program
Robbie Burns Fundraisers Country Music Weekend
Accordion Festival
Shriners Patient Travel Fund
Square Dances
Community Celebrations and Fund Raisers
Jerry was often sought out by local and well-known NL musicians to join them when performing at the Beaches Heritage Centre. His passion for music started early in life in bands that filled dance floors in Gander, GFW, Square Pond, St. John’s, and elsewhere with the music hits of the day.
Jerry was officially recognized by the Beaches Heritage Society for his efforts preserving our music heritage through his years of volunteer service. While never seeking the spotlight, with his quiet, reserved demeanor, Jerry formed life long bonds with fellow musicians and enriched the lives of many.
He will be missed.
