It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden and unexpected loss of our dearest Jan who passed away at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the age of 78. Devoted wife to Daniel John Quinlan to whom she has been lovingly married for 57 wonderful years. Cherished mother to Tracey (Edward) Cocciollo of Brampton, Shannon (Derek) Irwin-Lewis of Oakville and Jen (Jeff) Bangild of Burlington. Proud grandmother to Aidan, Connor, Evan, Abby, Nolan, Emma, Quin and Ryan. Dearly missed by her brothers Richard (Maureen) Ampleford and Tim (the late Diana) Ampleford. Forever in the hearts of her extended family and friends across Canada and the United States whom she loved so very much, and her beloved cat Kona. Predeceased by her parents Victor and Lillian (nee Griffiths) Ampleford and her nephew Mark Ampleford.
Jan was raised in Leaside and attended Northlea Elementary School as a youngster and then Leaside High where, at the tender age of 15, she met the love of her life. Together, Dan and Jan weathered the many historic moments of the 1960s while sock hopping to the music of the time at her prom. Jan supported Dan’s love of cars and the racetrack, the two of them making memories at F1 races before rejoicing in the beauty of building their family together through the 1970s.
Her family is her legacy and her greatest source of pride and happiness. They are her whole world. Prior to the birth of their three little girls, Jan had been working as a receptionist at Merrill Lynch. She gave it all up and dedicated her life to her cherished role of mom and wife. She was always there; before school, at lunchtime, and after school. Dan’s company transferred him around the country every couple of years, which was difficult for the family. It was her support for him and her strength in being adaptable that guided her girls in how to regularly navigate being the new kid on the block and grow from each experience.
If motherhood filled her with purpose and love, becoming a grandma to her eight grandchildren filled her world to bursting. She was ever present in their lives, never missing a hockey game, vocal performance, football game, volleyball game, development milestone or inchstone, hanging art pieces on her wall or using a handmade bookmark. She relished hearing about, or being a part of, every minutia of their lives. She spoiled them with love, her time, strawberry milk, overflowing Christmas stockings, and hugs.
Jan was an avid reader and always had a novel on the go. She was engaged with current events, loved Hawaii, yellow roses and hibiscuses, her cozy slippers and a warm latte, sunsets, the Kennedy family history, Beach Boys, Elvis, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, Toronto Maple Leafs, and her beloved Toronto Blue Jays.
The daughter of an accountant, Jan was notoriously frugal. The running joke was that she could leave the house with five dollars and come home with six. But if she was frugal with her wallet, she most definitely wasn’t with her heart. She loved hard and with her whole heart. If you were her friend, or if you married one of her brothers, you became her sister. If you married one of her daughters, you became her son. If you married one of her nieces or nephews, you became her nephew or niece.
She was small but mighty. She was ever present yet unobtrusive. She was the rock for her family and friends.
Jan may be gone from this world; however, she lives on in the stories and memories she has left with all those she touched during her lifetime. As per Jan’s wishes, and those of her family, a private cremation will be taking place. A Celebration of Life to honour this incredible woman will be planned for a later date. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to McMaster Children’s Hospital would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
