Janice Leonhardt Obituary
Janice Irene Leonhardt
1945-2025
Janice was born November 16, 1945, in Brooks, Alberta to Irene Mae and Bernard (Ben) Fodness. She grew up with her four siblings, firstly on the farm located in the Winnifred area of Alberta and also the early years of going to school were spent there. Later the family moved into Medicine Hat for several years and then to Drumheller in 1959 where Janice continued her education, meeting and gaining many new friends in short order and still to this day. After completing her schooling, she began as an operator with Alberta Government Telephones. In early 1962 she met her future husband, Gerald, who was beginning his career with grain farming and on September 12th,1962 they were married to become as one. After living in four separate locations, they were able to begin a new life on their own land that was purchased and moved into a remodeled building on “Mother’s Day” of 1964 however with no electricity nor running water. Janice now was helping with her husband, being the homemaker and also guardian for their first son, Stewart. Janice endured hardships however eventually better times became in their favour with a new modern family home in 1973. She now had a much larger home to care for as well as her two children as on April 25,1966 Steven was born and she continued helping with outdoor farm work whenever required and always making wonderful meals. After many guests exclaiming of her super talent she would respond saying “she did not even know how to boil water when she got married”. She wished to have every moment special with the family and especially children, and she did. She was a true partner, always working together, whether to do fencing, hauling grain from the fields or being there to console anyone that needed some love. During this time, she also got involved in doing needlepoint work completing over twenty masterpieces of art. With her family now able to help with some of the farm work she wished to involve herself in doing something on her own and began employment at the Royal Tyrell Museum in 1988 as booking coordinator. She loved her work and thrived at all the new developments, having calls from all over North America and beyond and also meeting people from various countries. Janice discontinued her employment at the museum in 2000 and for a short spell worked as a teller with local RBC bank. Soon after she would enjoy the RV lifestyle until 2019. She also enjoyed the ocean cruises to the Caribbean, Panama and the many events of NASCAR. Janice was a special person, meeting and loving people around her and truly loved to be with her husband, whether in a tractor, or a truck taking grain to the terminals and travelling hundreds of thousands of miles on the back of the Gold Wing.
She gave her whole heart and with both their fingers intertwined she said goodbye to her love on, February 4,2025.
Janice is survived by her loving husband of 62 years Gerald, her children, Stewart/Debbie, Steven, Michelle and seven grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren.
A commemorative gathering of family and friends is anticipated at a later date.
