Obituary of James Angus Elliott
Born: October 18, 1937 – London, Ontario ~ Died: July 23, 2025 – Ottawa, Ontario
Jim was born to Emily Tancock Elliott (1904-2001) and John Kerr Elliott (1905-1982). He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Patricia (Peggy) Elliott (August 1998 – Ottawa) and his daughter Katherine Elizabeth Elliott (1965 – Düsseldorf), as well as two young twin daughters in infancy in Bogotá. Mourning Jim are his life partner Joan Anne Thraves, his daughter Margaret Ann (Mark), his sons John Angus Henry (Gwen) and Michael George Alexander (Nancy), as well as Joan Anne’s son Tom Hughes (Angela), and daughter Cath Hughes (Nick). Jim is also missed by grandchildren Charlie, Mandy, Becky, AJ, Jayson, and Alex: and great grandchildren William, Chloe and Avery, and Joan Anne’s granddaughters Kiera and Emma.
Jim grew up in London, Ontario and graduated in Economics from the University of Western Ontario in 1959 (?). While at Western, Jim served as a transport officer in The Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He taught briefly at Queens University, where he met Peggy. He also briefly worked in the Fisheries Department in BC counting fish out of a helicopter for a summer. In 1962, Jim served at his first overseas posting, at the High Commission in Karachi, Pakistan. His career would carry Jim to Germany, France, Colombia, Ottawa, Venezuela, Chicago, LA, and finally as Consul General in Düsseldorf and Atlanta. His penchance for travel was fed by his time abroad.During his retirement, Jim split his time between summers in Ottawa and winters on Habor Island SC.,where Jim was notorious for always winning the “Southern Chili Cook Off” year after year.
Jim was a loving father, husband and partner. He will be missed by family, friends and colleagues on five continents. It was impossible to meet Jim and not be involved in some esoteric conversation for the next few hours. He was known as a walking encyclopedia, as was his father.
When Jim entered your life, it was changed forever. He was an amazing storyteller and always included a sense of adventure and humour which always left you feeling uplifted. We know that Jim is having his second dry martini and doing the NY Times Sunday Crossword as he watches over us. Over the years, Jim also spent many happy days with his cats, Mr. Higgins, Clancy, and Holli.
We would like to extend our deepest appreciation and thanks for the exceptional care that Jim has received from the paramedics and medical team at The Ottawa Hospital, as well as Jim’s longtime home care nurse Lubbing, for her dedication and deep care for Jim over the past few years.
Jim rests at Pinecrest Cemetery in Ottawa. There will be a visitation on Thursday, August 7,2025 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon, followed by an immediate family interment ceremony.
Please join us to share in Jim’s memory. Donations in lieu of flowers can go to The John K Elliott Scholarship in Master of Media in Journalism and Communication at Western University.
