It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Christopher on Monday, March 17, 2025, St. Patrick’s Day, at the age of 56. He entered into eternal life peacefully at the University of New Mexico hospital in Albuquerque, NM, after a courageous battle with cancer, in the loving presence of family. Predeceased by beloved parents Edward and Genevieve M. Dear brother of Edward J. and wife Anita, and much-loved brother of Michael A. Loved by Gina Hauke, whose ever-present devotion and support helped to extend his life. He will also be missed by many loving cousins and friends.
James earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Windsor and subsequently obtained certification as a Professional Engineer. He had a successful career, rising through the ranks of leading telecom and technology companies. He started his career in Ottawa, Ontario, before moving to San Jose, California, then relocating briefly to Portsmouth, England and then to Albuquerque, New Mexico. James was a respected manager and vice president, adept at handling multiple projects and solving problems with aplomb. He balanced his intelligence, competence, and drive with humility and a direct, honest approach, which made him well-liked among his colleagues and those who served under him. James was known for a no-nonsense style and the ability to get the job done and the product delivered. His distinguished professional reputation was well-earned and a source of pride for his family. The early years of James’ career saw him travel the world on business to places such as Europe, India, the Middle East, and Asia. These journeys highlighted James’ adventurous spirit and enkindled in him a love of travel which he was able to partake in until near the very end of his life. James was fearless and a risk taker, both professionally and privately; he always sought out new challenges and experiences. Since childhood, James had many hobbies and interests, each of which he explored passionately at different times in his life. Whether it was fishing, astronomy, wine making, snowboarding, or cooking, to name a few, he would immerse himself and enjoy these pastimes with great zeal. He was an excellent self-taught cook and prepared delicious meals for his loved ones even at the end of his life when he could not partake. James was an honourable and very private man, but he also had a large and irresistible personality, which was most on display with his sense of humour. His boisterous and often irreverent levity, delivered as only he could, was overpowering at times, but always very endearing. James was a compassionate, dependable, and fiercely loyal individual, and he possessed a quiet, deep, abiding love for those close to his heart. All who loved him knew that he could be relied upon without question. From childhood and through all of life’s travails, the special love shared between him and his brothers was a constant, unwavering blessing. James’ illness and its rapid progression was unexpected and devastating, but he fought it with his characteristic courage, strength, resolve, and grit. James was a faithful man, and his commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ while accepting suffering with humility and determination during his treatment was truly an inspiration.
We grieve his passing but take solace in the knowledge that he is now with God, and we hope to one day be reunited with him in the presence of our Lord.
Donations in memory of James may be made to the Society of St. Vincent De Paul (St. Alphonsus Conference) 85 Park St. E. Windsor, On., N9A 3A8.
