The Caring Protector
With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father and gigi. Ivan Krawchuk, more often referred to as John, nurtured relationships through his gentle nature and a wink of his eye. He leaves to grieve his cherished daughters Ann Krawchuk (David Bueti); and Emily Brooker (Daniel Booker); grandchildren Leo and Charlie Brooker. Ivan reunites with his predeceased parents Maria, and John Krawchuk, as well as the love of his life, his wife Krystyna.
Born in Staromishchyna, Pidvolochysk, Ternopil, Ukraine, the son of a soldier conscripted to the Polish Army shortly after his birth, Ivan was raised by his mother on the family farm. As a child, he grew up not knowing his father whom, as a P.O.W. escaped from Germany to Canada. Ivan later served in the USSR army from 1958 – 1962 as a Private specialized in military transport. In 1967 and at 28 years of age, Ivan along with his mother emigrated to reunite with his father in Winnipeg where they could finally live together as a family. Here he quickly gained employment at The Ukrainian Voice newspaper on Dufferin where he worked for over a decade while studying English in the evenings.
Ivan met Krystyna in Winnipeg and were married on October 24th, 1981. Their first daughter Ann was born exactly nine months later and their second daughter Emily, joined the family three years later. Together Ivan and Krystyna started their family on Alfred Ave and moved in 1988 to their dream home on Beauty Ave. His entrepreneurial spirit thrived within various lucrative retail vending pursuits while he applied his mechanical abilities to careers within Chrysler, Paramount, Kenworth, and finally retired at Atomic Transport in 1998 as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic.
After Krystyna’s sudden passing in 1997, the single parent Ivan was left to raise two young teenage girls on his own. With honour and dignity, he took up the role of both mother and father in his late fifties. After a demanding career in mechanics, raising two daughters alone was the toughest job he ever loved.
Ivan’s home was always open to friends and family for regular weekend gatherings where camaraderie and political debate were had. His garden perfectly maintained each spring through summer, grew full with fresh vegetables for his fall canning specials; and always, included his eye-watering horseradish, mouth-watering dill-pickles, and most sanctified sauerkraut.
His unwavering devotion for his daughters could not be matched. Even their friends were the benefactors of his protection and generosity. His commitments to their lives and safety were paramount. Whether it was dropping them off, picking them up, or making sure they returned home safe, he could be depended upon at any hour, morning, noon, or night.
While taking time off from his hobbies, he could be found deliberating over coffee in Garden City Mall within his old boy’s club and almost daily, would enjoy breakfast or lunch meetings at Sal’s with long-time, best pal, Paul Filipowitz. For these moments he would cherish and insist Emily make for him many photo prints of his grandsons.
At 80, Ivan settled into Holy Family Home (HFH) until passing with his loving daughters at his side. Ivan developed dear relationships with several of his closest caregivers, considered like family. Some of his favorites referred to him as “dyad’ko Ivan” or “Uncle Ivan” which always brought a smile to his face. The Ukrainian language, common cultural experiences, and Facetimes into their motherland, solidified bonds of friendship eternal.
Ivan’s family wishes to thank Holy Family Home and the exemplary staff for their incredible care and support of our beloved father. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or, writing to your MLA urging for improvements to conditions for seniors within long term care facilities.
We love you Ta, “Have a good one.” Until we meet again.
