It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Iris Joyce Vera Janet Diecksmeier née Ford on September 28, 2024, at the age of 88. Joyce passed peacefully in her sleep due to natural causes surrounded by all her children, grandchildren, and the wonderful staff of Mountain View Manor, who cared for her in her final year.
Joyce was born November 15th, 1935, in Brooks, Alberta, to Arthur Wesley Ford and Irene Matilda Ford (Cripps.) She was the second youngest of six children. In 1937, at the age of two, they all moved to Newton, British Columbia. They resided on a piece of farmland near the train tracks on 72nd Ave and King George Hwy. There, they raised all sorts of animals throughout her childhood and built their own farmhouse on the land. Joyce spent lots of time reading and creating her own stories to share with other neighbourhood kids. She was a talented seamstress, learning the craft from her mother, often making clothes for herself and friends. Joyce and Irene would go shopping in New Westminster where they would buy the fabrics and materials from Columbia Street shops. There held the Hollywood Bowl, one of Joyce’s favourite places to go for fun another being Stardust Roller Rink in Whalley.
She attended Newton Elementary School for grades 1-6, Queen Elizabeth High School for grades 7-10, then Princess Margaret High School when they first opened for grades 10-12. After graduation and working in the White Spot chicken kiosk and telephone company, she saved up money to attend Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing program. After graduating from the program, she moved to Berkeley California with some close school friends and began her job at a private hospital called Alta Bates in the nursery for night shifts. After 1.5 years she moved back to BC and helped open the Nursery at Surrey Memorial hospital, becoming one of the head nurses of the unit. She continued to work there for the next decade. In 1960 she married Bernie Diecksmeier and together had 3 children. During that time of having children, she decided to end her nursing career, to stay at home full time to look after her family. After 24 years of marriage, Joyce and Bernie decided to go their separate ways, and Joyce rekindled a romance with her first teenage love, Ernie Nasalsky. They resided in the area spending summers on the Shuswap on Ernie’s boat. Joyce spent the last 30 years on her own in Ocean Park Surrey BC, before going into care.
She has now joined her diseased family members: her father Arthur Ford, mother Irene Ford (Cripps), brother Jack, sisters Lorainne (Goodfellow) and Josephine (Hulings), and her long-time love Ernie. She is survived by her sister Eva Baker, brother Vance Ford (Sheila), ex husband and long-time friend Bernie Diecksmeier, her three children – Jean, Jim, Patty, and four grandchildren – Ahna, Elisa, Angus, & Kira. As well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be no service as per Joyce’s wishes. If you wish for a place to go to remember her, she always said you’ll find me in Sicamous at the Shuswap Lake where she loved life the most. Her last words of wisdom for everyone to remember her by is: « enjoy every bit of life as you possibly can because it goes by fast. Forget the bad, even if it isn’t easy, focus on the good and remember all the great times you had and never let them go. »
We will love and miss you forever sweet Angel (Mom / Ama)
