It is with heavy hearts, yet grateful spirits, that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, mémé, aunt, in-law and dear friend, Irene Roy, at the age of 93, on January 29th, 2025.
Right up until the end, Irene remained a pillar of strength and resilience, deeply cherished by her children; Paul (Linda), John, Marc (Sue), André (Karen), Gérard (Mary-Anne), Marie-Anne (Greg), the late Robert (2013), and Léo (Nipada). Her love extended across generations as a devoted Mémé to 30 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She is reunited in heaven with her husband of 70 years, Andy (2023), grandson Kyle (1994) and great-granddaughter Lilly (2009). Irene also leaves behind her treasured fur baby who brought her immense comfort and companionship.
Born on January 21, 1932, Irene Labute entered the world with a fiery determination and a zest for life. From the moment she arrived, she brought joy to her parents, Madeleine (1986) and Ernest (1955), who were both amazed and frequently bewildered by their baby girl’s boundless energy. Her father was often tasked to take her on errands and to « need » her help with the garden. Her siblings- Isabelle (1988), Léo (1987), Paul (1991), Antoinette
(1941), Jeannette (1926) and Ernie (2019)-quickly recognized Irene’s spirited personality and athletic skills. Tennis matches and baseball games often ended with Irene victorious, her hair amiss and her bright laughter ringing through the air.
Irene carried that same spark into every stage of her life. As a young woman, she worked as a cashier at the local grocer and later as a teller at the neighborhood bank. Customers gravitated to her line, drawn in by her dazzling style and the twinkle in her eye that promised kindness and conversation.
Her vibrant energy became the heartbeat of her family when she married Andy and together raised eight children— a full and lively household with the occasional moments of pure chaos. Despite the demands of raising seven boys and one girl, Irene managed to sew clothes for her family, whip up three home-cooked meals a day, play Euchre and Pepper with the girls as well as host countless social gatherings with grace and joy. Beyond her many contributions, Irene’s warm heart and community spirit shone through her active membership in the Catholic Women’s League and the Tecumseh Ladies Council. However, no matter what, she always found the time and energy to play her heart out —whether on the tennis court, golf course, or at the bowling alley-always living by her motto: « Thankfully, I run hyper!' »
Once her children were grown, Irene poured her creativity and energy into knitting and quilting. Her passion culminated in the opening of her cherished wool shop, Le Trésor de Laine. The store became a haven for kindred spirits, where aspiring and seasoned knitters gathered to share their craft and laughter.
Irene’s greatest joy, however, was always her family. Holidays at her home were filled with the comforting aroma of her legendary apple pies and the irresistible flavors of her chicken and sliders.
Grandchildren eagerly gathered around her table for crafts, baking, or dancing in the basement to Sister Sledge’s « We Are Family », memories they’ll treasure forever.
Her final year was spent at Heron Terrace, where the compassionate staff ensured Irene was surrounded by warmth, love, and engaging activities. The Roy family will be forever grateful for their tender care, which allowed Irene to shine brightly until the very end.
Irene’s life was a beautiful lesson in love, strength, and joy. Her belief in others and her unyielding confidence made her an unforgettable mentor to her children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends. While her loss will be deeply felt, we celebrate her life and legacy and hold her in our hearts with gratitude and deep love.
