Irene Kukura: At Rest with God
Irene (nee Gendreau) Kukura left this world on Monday, February 10, 2025, entering into Jesus’ promise of life after death. She trusted fully in Christ and His promises.
Having learned of her cancer diagnosis a year ago she accepted it and heeded the advice of various medical experts. Irene received exceptional care from the professionals at the Regina General Hospital and her team from the Allan Blair Cancer Centre and finally at the Wascana Hospital. She commented that she felt secure and comfortable in the hospice wing of the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre. The staff there were kind, caring and diligent in providing pain management and keeping her safe.
In life, Irene spoke lovingly of her childhood homes at St. Rose du lac and Ochre Beach, Manitoba. Many fond memories were spent in the presence of her siblings: Jacqueline Prefontaine, Yvonne Maguet, Adrienne Archambault, Louis Gendreau and Rene Gendreau and their families.
She was proud of the family Dennis (deceased) and she created: Malania (Kukura) and Rob Delcourt, Matthew and Chantal (Jones), Christopher and Krisdy (Shindler) and Sean and Lori (Wahl). Irene raised her family primarily in Red Deer where she worked for the Catholic School Division as a grade one and two French immersion teacher. She found immense joy teaching the Littles. In particular, she loved preparing catechism lessons where she could share her faith with her students and learn about their relationship with Jesus. She spent her time and money making sensory items for her students, cutting out laminated materials and organizing her classroom to be stimulating and inviting for the children.
Irene had the opportunity to earn a master’s in education degree as the first cohort of summer students at Lethbridge University. She had a great intellect and found the university program challenging and stimulating. Her program thesis focused on how to meaningfully involve parents in their children’s life at school. Irene graduated with a Masters with High Honors.
In her retirement, Dennis and she relocated to Fort Qu’Appelle where they were active members of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. Irene was a daily mass attendee, and she served the parish in various pastoral ways. For one project the parish priest, Father Louis Nguyen, recruited Irene to translate baptismal certificates from French to English. This work together was the start of a wonderful friendship.
Once living in Regina, Irene became a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Parish. She continued to deepen her relationship with the Lord through attending daily mass, viewing uplifting Catholic programming on EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network), and reading spiritual texts and devotions. She shared her beliefs and faith all the time with her family both far and near.
Irene’s children live in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. She was always interested in their lives and those of her grandchildren. She enjoyed phone calls, facetime calls, emails, texts, and visits where she could learn about everyone’s hobbies, their interests at school and their everyday lives. She was proud of them all: Tyler and Sydney Delcourt (Malania), Amelie and Elodie Kukura (Matthew), Kasper Kukura (Christopher) and Miguel, Gabriela, Emmanuelle, Rafael and Tobias Kukura (Sean).
With Sean’s family living in Regina, Irene was a regular at sporting events. She was an avid basketball and football fan often getting a ride to the games with Sean’s parents-in-law. Irene attended school graduations, weekly family backyard picnics, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter meals with the extended family. Memere was always invited! As her ability to walk became difficult, she attended mass at St. Anne’s Parish with Sean and his family. When she could no longer leave her home, Father Louis and Sean brought the Eucharist to Irene at her apartment and then to her at the Wascana Hospital.
Irene’s generosity and love of her family was felt through acts of kindness. She would knit slippers, knit for Birthright, make prayer shawls, financially support worthy institutions, gift her children, and pray, pray, pray for her family’s and other’s needs. We are truly better off having had Irene’s prayers reach God’s ears on our behalf. Her trust in God and love of His Church was sincere and deep.
We miss you already, Irene, and are thankful that you have been released from this life and saved by faith. We take comfort knowing you are with God.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at St. Anne’s Parish, 1701 Cowan Cres., Regina, SK.
