Ian McNab Obituary
It is with great sadness and much love that we announce the passing of Ian McNab. Ian passed away on Saturday, March 1, in Leduc at the age of 86 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Winifred; son, John (Kimberley); daughter, Sheena (Mike); his four grandchildren, Ian, Alia, Sara, and Megan; three great-grandchildren, Louise, John, and Russell; along with many extended family members still in the United Kingdom.
Ian first emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1962 with lots of ambition and the goal of eventually owning his own farm but had to return to Scotland later that same year to support family. He then returned to Canada in 1967 with his wife and almost one-year-old son to stay. Upon his return to Canada, he settled in rural Innisfail and worked for a local rancher that he had worked for during his original immigration to Canada. He later rented an acreage farm east of Innisfail, worked at the Strammit factory, and raised his own pigs. During this time, he welcomed the birth of his daughter. He worked on farms in the Penhold/Red Deer area for other landowners before the opportunity arose to run his own dairy farm at Alsike in 1973. After years of renting, land was purchased nearer to Breton, and a new dairy barn was built in 1981. Even with all the responsibilities of the dairy, he still found time to do custom work for other farmers. In 1993, the dairy was sold, and he moved to Strawberry Ridge Road (Warburg) to start beef and grain farming. Over the next nine years, he slowly reduced the cattle and grain to retire from the farming life and reside in Leduc in 2004.While enjoying retirement, he was officially diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006. His retirement saw him enjoying traveling, golf, and his family, but he still found life was too slow, so he gained employment at the airport—driving his motorcycle to work to shuttle cars for rental agencies. From there, he gained employment at Flaman, fixing agricultural equipment, which had always been a passion. He had to fully retire from the workforce at the age of 78 as his condition made it tough, even with so much support from the staff at Flaman, as he shared his invaluable knowledge of the equipment he fixed and serviced. He was always willing to help any friends and neighbors with anything they needed over the years.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
