HRYNIW, Cornell
August 29, 1940 — February 6, 2025
Cornell Hryniw, a beloved father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully with daughter Shannon and son-in-law Kerry by his side on February 6, 2025, in Kelowna, at the age of 84. Born on August 29, 1940, in Lamont, Alberta, Cornell’s life was marked by his kindness, humour, and a stubborn, strong-willed Ukrainian spirit.
Cornell is lovingly remembered by his daughter Shannon (Kerry) Klonteig; grandchildren Morgan (Kate) and Aimee (Caro); and his grand-dog Gemma; his brothers Marion (Patricia) Hrynew, Stan (Lorraine) Hryniw; his sisters Anne (Jackson) Wong, and Patti (Bob) Titryn; as well as many nieces, a nephew, several cousins, and many friends who greatly loved and respected him. He was predeceased by his parents, Jennie and Peter Hryniw; and his daughter, Shelley.
Cornell graduated from Lamont High School and, after completing his studies, worked for the Canadian National Railway (CNR) for about a year before moving on to a position at General Electric in Edmonton. He later met and married Audrey Chizawsky, and together they moved to Prince George, BC, where he worked for Union Oil and later for Finning Tractor. Afterward, they relocated to Williams Lake, B.C., and later to Vernon, B.C. Cornell was a dedicated and hard worker, and eventually had the chance to travel with work to many places around the world, including Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, and way up North in Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk.
A man of strength, positivity, and determination, Cornell was known for his sense of humour and strong-willed nature. He was always the “quiet” life of the party, whether playing a game of crib or dominos, enjoying a game of pool at the senior centre, or sharing a laugh with friends at the Legion or with his family.
Cornell was also a lover of music, with talent in both the banjo and mandolin, which brought joy to many. He was an avid fan of both baseball and hockey, having played both sports in his younger years. Ukrainian Christmas Dinner held a special place in his heart, and he continued the tradition year after year, bringing family together for food and celebration.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of laughter, strength, and love will live on through his family and friends.
As per Cornell’s wishes, no service will be held, just a private family gathering.
