It is with deep sorrow the family of Herbert Fox announce his passing at the Brooks Health Center on Friday, December 20th 2024 at the age of 86. Herb was born on February 3, 1938 in Lafleche Saskatchewan and was raised in the small town of Palmer Saskatchewan. Herb was very hard working and often worked multiple jobs. Herb began his active work life at a young age as a Heavy Equipment Operator building highways and working on the construction of Lake Diefenbaker. He then followed in his father’s footsteps working as a successful grain buyer in several Saskatchewan communities. It was during this time he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Dreger, and together had three children. Shortly after the children were born, they moved to British Columbia where Herb worked in several different occupations. Herb worked as a Lab Assistant in the Department of Pharmacology at UBC. After moving to the Okanogan area Herb built Vanguard Travel Trailers as well as trucks at White Truck. He later became an Ambulance EMT and taught Industrial First Aid courses. Afterwards Herb worked at Brenda Mines before it closed and then went on to become the owner of several businesses including the Elk River Inn, Lytton Pines Motel, and the Jaffray Pub. Finally, his last employment was for BC Forestry as Fire Warden and fought forest fires as a crew chief for Rap Attack.
After his retirement, Herb moved to Vernon BC where he and Betty became regular vendors at craft markets. Herb went on to become the President of the Vernon Farmers Market. Herb had many hobbies; he enjoyed leather crafting, woodworking for crafts, and gardening. He enjoyed playing cards and socializing. He was a great conversationalist and enjoyed people. Helping others was natural for him. Herb was an excellent dancer – light on his feet, he enjoyed music and attending dances. In the winter Herb and Betty became Snowbirds travelling in their motorhome to Arizona. They were fortunate to celebrate 55 years of marriage together.
Herb was predeceased by his wife Betty, his parents Charlie and Clara, siblings, Gwen, Tom, Don, and brother in-law Burt. He leaves behind his daughters Cathy (Roger), Shelley (Darren), Holly (Mike), 5 grandchildren: Everett (Tamara), Stacey (Joel), Ashley (Shayne), Briana (Sam), Felicia and 3 great grandchildren, and his sister, Clara.
After his wife Betty passed away in 2017 he moved to Brooks and later to Newbrook Lodge to be close to family. Herb made great friends and connections with the residents and staff of NBL. In recent years he was most happy sitting in the backyard of Cathy and Roger’s home, watching the garden grow and tending to yard work. He especially enjoyed bird watching, particularly waiting to feed the blue jays peanuts. He made plenty of trips with Shelley to Moose Jaw to visit his sister Clara. Herb was a proud and active member of Mizpah Masonic Lodge in Medicine Hat. Recently celebrating 60 years in Free Masonry.
The family would like to thank the doctors, hospital personnel, the visitor volunteers, and in particular the nursing staff at the sub-acute Unit B ward in the Brooks Hospital for their excellent care and compassion towards Herb. At Herb’s request there will be no funeral or memorial service and will later be interned along with his wife Betty at the cemetery in Palmer, Saskatchewan.
