Helen Dick Obituary
Helen (Loewen) Dick was born on February 3, 1933, in Miropol, Ukraine, to Nikolai and Anna Loewen, as the younger sister to brothers Harry and John. To say her early years were hard is an understatement. She never knew her father, as he was taken and killed shortly after her birth during Stalin’s Great Purge. In the following years, her family moved to Kadashevka, Ukraine, then to Poland, and eventually to Germany as World War II came to an end. There, they lived as refugees until immigrating to Canada in 1948, eventually settling in Coaldale, AB.
While in high school, Helen became very good friends with Erna (Dick), and through her, she got to know Art. They married in 1957 and moved to Winnipeg, where Art was finishing medical school. After his graduation and internship, they relocated to McCreary, MB. During these years, they were blessed with three children—Harvey, Sylvia, and Melvin.
The cold Manitoba winters and the small town of McCreary were not where they wanted to raise their family, so in 1966, they moved to Kelowna, joining the community of Kelowna MB Church, now Willow Park Church. Helen, along with Art, was always looking to befriend and encourage others. In addition to forming friendships with people their own age, they also built relationships with many younger than themselves, providing their children with great friends. Their hearts were loving, their home was open, and “Dick’s Lot” on Okanagan Lake became a place where many found deep connection (and good waterskiing lessons). To the end, Helen was intentional in her friendships, always hoping to encourage and uplift others, comfort those who were hurting, and deepen her love for her Saviour.
Other places called—from Zambia and Zimbabwe to Keremeos, Peachland, and back to Kelowna—Helen was a friend to many. To those blessed to call her Mom, Gramma, and Oma, she filled their lives with joy.
Seemingly healthy and active almost to the end, her last year brought health challenges, culminating in a cancer diagnosis on January 16. In early February, all 29 of her family members gathered at hospice in Kelowna to celebrate Helen’s 88th birthday. On February 17, she was called home to her beloved Jesus.
She is predeceased by her husband, Art; her parents, Nikolai and Anna; and her brothers, Harry and John. Left to mourn are Harv and Gwen of Kelowna, Sylvia and Stewart Wright of Keremeos, and Mel and Monika of Abbotsford. As Helen never referred to anyone as « in-laws, » she is also lovingly remembered by 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service is planned for March 10 at 1:00 pm at Willow Park Church, 439 Hwy 33, Kelowna, BC, V1X 1Y2. A livestream will also be available by contacting the family.
In memory of Helen, in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Run for Water (runforwater.kindful.com) or Maple Springs Bible Camp (www.maplesprings.ca/).
