It is with heavy hearts that we announce
the death of Harvey Hanoomansingh, in
Sackville, NB, on Friday December 27th.
Born in the village of Cunupia, Trinidad
in 1936, Harvey arrived in Sackville in 1955 to attend Mount Allison
University. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Education degrees
there and later, his Master of Education at the University of New
Brunswick.
While studying at Mount Allison, he met
and married Mount Allison student Eunice Rampersad. After teaching in
Trinidad, they returned to Sackville in 1962. Harvey took a position
at Dorchester Consolidated High School, where he eventually became
principal. He moved to Sackville Junior High School (which later
became Marshview Middle School), teaching English there until his
retirement.
Harvey left a lasting impression. A
colleague described him as the teacher that so many young teachers and
students tried to emulate. In tributes on social media, former
students wrote about the respect and support he gave them. One said
that in addition to being an engaging English teacher, he taught them
empathy and kindness and provided a safe space to be themselves and to
believe in themselves.
Teaching was his vocation but it
wasn’t Harvey’s only passion. He loved farming,
raising cows and chickens on the family hobby farm and growing a
massive garden. He was a terrific cook and took pride in
family meals that were entirely home-grown. He enjoyed
photography and built a basement darkroom. Harvey loved music,
entertaining with his beautiful tenor and rollicking harmonica and was
an entertaining public speaker. An avid reader on a wide range of
subjects, He shared with his children his love of words and ideas, as
well as the importance of analysis and critical
thinking.
Harvey extended kindness, gentleness and
inclusiveness to people of all walks of life, in all settings. He
exuded compassion and tolerance, practiced humility and was larger
than life to his children and grandchildren. Most importantly, he
believed in telling others why they were special.
He is deeply missed by Eunice and their
family, son Ian (Nancy), daughter Ria (Scott), grandchildren Daniel
(Alison), James (Natalia), Nathan, Nolan, and Nalini and
great-granddaughter Thea.
Arrangements are under the care and
supervision of Jones Funeral Home, 70
