Harold Lee Sonmor Obituary
Harold Lee Sonmor
April 23, 1932 – February 19, 2025
Our hearts are heavy to announce the passing of HAROLD LEE SONMOR, 92, on February 19th, 2025 in Calgary, Alberta. He always said his paychecks came from Calgary, but he never wanted to live there. However, it was his home for about 5 ½ years, until he passed away in hospital, when a series of depleting health issues overcame him.
Born on April 23, 1932 in Loverna, Saskatchewan, Harold was the second of five beloved sons of John “Lee” and Alma Sonmor. He spent most of his youth in the Battlefords area of Saskatchewan, where they grew up to be self-reliant, responsible citizens, caring for their family and community. The brothers were strongly bonded and held to their early values, no matter where they lived or what pursuits they took up. Harold moved to Alberta after schooling, where he began a career with Calgary Power. He met and married his lovely wife June (Bitzer) when work took him to Hardisty. They wed on November 19, 1955 and started their family at Hardisty, with the birth of their son, Christopher. Harold’s job with the power company had constant opportunities to advance and move around and the family soon relocated briefly to Camrose, where daughter Trudy was born. From there, they moved to Redwater and then to Onoway, where son Timothy came on board. Each town presented new dynamics, landscapes and district size/structure, where Harold quickly fit in and learned the lay of the land, both figuratively and literally. In 1968, they transferred to Provost, 1971 to Sylvan Lake, and 1984 his final company transfer (which by then had been renamed TransAlta Utilities) to High River, where the close proximity of the scenic foothills was a happy distraction on the road to retirement. On a whim, Harold and June moved to Lethbridge in 1994, where they became immersed in the busy life of a larger town and excitement of unknown territory. June passed away in 2002 and Harold continued to keep moving, to Turner Valley, back to Lethbridge, back to High River, up to Gull Lake, then Blackfalds, a short stop at Black Diamond and then again High River, before coming to Calgary.
Harold is survived by his youngest brother Gordon, son Chris (Mary), daughter Trudy (Andy), grandchildren Angie, Trevor, Kenny (Jacquie), Kimberly (Brad), great grandchildren Alexis, Shae and Dom. Also survived by eight sisters in-law and brothers in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Harold was predeceased by son Tim, parents Lee and Alma, wife June, brother Ray, several sisters in-law and brothers in-law, brother Dave and brother Eugene.
His job gave him a high profile as the “Calgary Power man” in his green company truck everywhere he went. He was known by everyone in that capacity. Harold led a very active life as a sport participant and fan. After retirement, Harold took up swimming competitively, regionally, provincially and even nationally, winning dozens of medals. He loved the outdoors. Gardening and yard work, horseback riding and the farming life, canoe camping, skiing – both cross-country and alpine, sightseeing, road tripping, you name it! Harold was an avid volunteer, generously offering time and a practical application to many community groups wherever he lived.
He was a good dancer and didn’t shy away from giving a speech. Harold readily gave a helping hand and had a knack for knowing, in advance, what tool or action might be needed. He had a great appetite, sense of humor and engaging personality.
A Memorial Service will be held at Snodgrass Funeral Homes High River on March 8 at 2:00 pm. March 29th, 2025 will be held as a tentative date for the graveside ceremony.
