Harold “Hal” Oakley
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harold “Hal” Oakley, age 74, on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.
Hal was born in Baddeck, NS, to the late George and Mary Oakley and grew up in a tight-knit family in Cambridge, MA. In 1992, Hal and his wife, Carol (Smith), relocated their family to Middle River, NS and spent decades involved in their close community of family and friends. Hal took pride in his children and thrived on being a source of guidance and support throughout their lives. His favourite nickname of all: “Grandpa” came from his greatest joys on earth, his grandchildren near and far.
Hal was always a hands-on kind of guy. He spent many hours driving and fixing anything with a motor and steering wheel. Folks passing through Middle River would often see him outside tinkering around a vehicle or in the yard doing odd jobs and handyman work, waving as they passed by. A beautiful sunset followed by an early bedtime was the perfect evening for Hal, that way he could be up and ready to start his day with the next sunrise. He was always on the go, helping out his family and friends, only stopping long enough to spend time with his family or to grab a coffee and have a catch-up with his cousin and close friend, Bruce MacRae.
True to their marriage vows, the promise to endure “in sickness and in health” was upheld with dignity and love as Hal provided care for Carol throughout her fight with Cancer. During their many years of partnership, Hal and Carol both loved spending time soaking in the simple pleasures of life together. Driving along the Cabot Trail to catch a glimpse of the waves rolling in along the coastline and grabbing a bite of lunch was enough to fill their souls.
If there’s one thing that Hal will be remembered for in his community, it’s his kind demeanor and willingness to help those in need. His role as a father, son, brother, friend and devoted husband will never be forgotten as he leaves behind a strong legacy of love and kindness. His children and grandchildren will miss his presence dearly but will continue to keep him close in their hearts forever.
Hal is survived by his children, Tony (Maria), Scott (Jamie), Shawn (Melissa), Christy (Doug), Christopher (Sabine), and Matthew (Ashley); brothers, Dana (Marie), John (Marie) and Keith (Anne); sisters, Brenda (Paul Curry), Ann (Allan Nicholson), and Kim (Brian MacIver); as well as his special friend and neighbor, Susie Publicover.
Aside from his parents, Hal was predeceased by his loving wife, Carol.
The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to the Cardiac Care Unit staff at both the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and Queen Elizabeth II Hospital.
A graveside service in honour of Hal’s life will be held at the Middle River Cemetery on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at 2pm.
Donations in loving remembrance can be submitted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the SPCA.
