It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Gerhard Rust, a beloved husband and father. Gregory passed away peacefully at home in Ottawa with his family by his side on March 18, 2025, at the age of 65.
Gregory was born on May 23, 1959, in Sarnia Ontario to parents the late Herbert and Irene Rust. Loving husband to Cindy Rust and father to Anna (Ben) and Amy (Josh). Devoted grandfather of Alice and Scarlett. He also leaves behind siblings Harald (Sara) and the late Susanne (Bernie). Proud uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
Gregory grew up in Petrolia on the family farm and after meeting his best friend and life partner Cindy in 1978, they attended university in Waterloo together. After graduating with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, they got married in 1983 and Gregory began working at Pratt and Whitney designing aircraft engines. In 1989 he took the opportunity to join the Foreign Service for the Government of Canada. He worked as a Foreign Service Officer for 35 years. He had the privilege to serve abroad in Tokyo, Washington DC, and Brussels. As a lifelong learner, Gregory completed his Master of Business Administration in 2004.
Gregory was a true family man. He was known for his sense of humour, positive outlook and passion for life. He was an avid runner, loved music and space. Gregory leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and strength.
A funeral service will be held to celebrate Gregory’s life on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, at 11:00 a.m. with longtime friend and pastor Rev. Roger Ellis officiating. A reception will take place at The Smith Family Centre with a private interment following in Wyoming Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the Orleans Palliative Care Team and health care professionals for allowing Gregory to fiercely fight his battle with dignity at home. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society – Brain and CNS Cancer Research and/or to The Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada would be appreciated by Gregory’s family (cheques only when donating at the funeral home please).
