Goro Yamada
mars 11, 1936 — février 4, 2025
Calgary
Goro Yamada passed away peacefully in his sleep on the afternoon of February 4, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 89. Born on January 3, 1936, in Anjo, Japan, he was the beloved son of Jinichi and Iwa Yamada. He grew up in Okazaki, near Nagoya, as the fourth of seven children. As a boy, he loved fishing and playing baseball with his neighborhood friends, while also experiencing the challenges of wartime Japan.
Goro’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. As a young man, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he found purpose and community. He was among the first native Japanese full-time missionaries, later serving as a counselor to the Mission President and ultimately as President of the Japan Fukuoka Mission (1976-1979). His devotion to Christ and commitment to service shaped his life and inspired those around him.
On January 23, 1962, Goro married Eiko Kunugi in Tokyo, Japan. He was a city boy; she was a country girl. Together, they built a life rooted in love, friendship, and mutual support. Every time he left home, he would lovingly reassure her, “I’m going and will be back.”
Goro’s career was as dynamic as he was. After learning English, he worked as an administrator for the U.S. Occupation Army before moving to Calgary in 1967 with Eiko. There, he worked in a window factory and as a diesel mechanic before transitioning into real estate, where he excelled and earned numerous awards. Later, he pursued his own business ventures, always embracing new challenges with determination and enthusiasm.
Above all, Goro was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Eiko, and their children: Josh (Susy), Mark (Anita), Ken, and Archie (Manya). He was a proud grandfather to 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who lovingly knew him as “Grandpa.” He took immense pride in their achievements and cherished every moment spent with them.
A true outdoorsman, Goro found joy in camping, fishing, hiking, and skiing with his family. He was also an avid golfer, always making new friends on the course with his warm, jovial nature. Known for his kindness, humor, and generosity, he brightened the lives of those around him. His greatest happiness was found in time spent with his family.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 940 Acadia Dr SE, Calgary, AB.
Goro will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, faith, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
