Geraldine Kostuchuk Sept 9, 1938 – April 27, 2025
Geri was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba to Samuel and Jean Hordy.
Her father immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine and her ancestors from her mother’s side were also from that part of the world.
She attended Terrace and Hapnot schools, excelled as a student, was active in basketball at the community centre and was on the Copper Queens cheerleading squad.
Summer months were often spent on the farm in Ethelbert at Aunt Emily and Uncle Bill Hancharyk’s farm.
After high school, Geri worked at the local Co-op and then enrolled in the nursing program at St Boniface School of Nursing in Winnipeg, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1959. Her first job as a nurse was in Swan River and later as RN Supervisor at the Flin Flon General Hospital.
It was in Swan River where she became reacquainted with the young and handsome, Gene Kostuchuk from Valley River. Before committing to this man, she boarded a ship and sailed on an adventure to tour Europe with the best of girlfriends.
Their love for fun and adventure made for a perfect romance, and the couple tied the knot in Dauphin on October 9, 1960.
Island Falls was their first home, where they developed everlasting friendships, a love for fishing and waterskiing and an appreciation for the Indigenous community.
Also when they had their first, Kerri!
With the closing of the power plant, their next move was to Flin Flon. Their first home was on Green Street.
Always a busy person, Geri worked as a night shift supervisor at the general hospital and raised 4 children, Kerri, Billy, David and Patti.
When Gene built her dream home on Prince Charles Place, she delighted in furnishing their new home and planting flowers and vegetables in her garden.
Among her many activities, Geri loved fishing, swimming, curling, golf and playing cards. She was a true competitor and triumphed as a skip in many local curling bonspiels and bridge tournaments. She loved doing crossword puzzles and trying her luck at the video slot machines. Not one to sit idly, Geri enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and painting easter eggs. Family members were often welcome recipients of her crafts.
Geri and Gene loved to travel and visited many countries as well as close relatives across Canada.
Adoring their friends and joy for life, the couple loved to entertain and were known for their kind and generous hospitality, great food and laughter.
In later years, Geri was involved in the hospital nurses alumni as well as the Ukrainian women’s league, Meals on Wheels and a volunteer search and rescue agent with CASARA. Every year she would willingly help make Christmas cakes or work at fundraising bake sales with the church.
As a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was so proud of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.
Most of all, she was so fortunate to be surrounded and cared for by her loving family, holding her hands as she transitioned to join her late husband Gene and her ancestors.
A life well-lived and cherished forever.
Geraldine is survived by children and their partners, Kerri and (Late) Roy Akins, Billy Kostuchuk and Josephine McKay, David and Tammy Kostuchuk, Patti and Howie Baral, Grandchildren Freya, Zoe, Brianna, Brett, Niko, Great-grandchildren Luna and Brodie.
Sister and Brother-in-laws Lesia and Lou Sawkey, Roger and Emily Johnson.
Nieces and nephews James, Kristin, Bobby Kostuchuk, Gordie, Alex, Kathy, Peter, Chris, Mickey Johnson, Daren, Annie, Greg, Jeff Sawkey, Great-grand nieces and nephews, Willie, Lesia, Veronica, Jozefin, Jen, Jake, Alex, Charlotte, Olivia
