Obituary for Gerald Michael Murphy
July 25, 1930 – November 9, 2024
Gerald M. Murphy, aged 94, died Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Willingdon Care Centre in Burnaby. Born in Stewart, BC, he grew up in Stewart and Cumberland on Vancouver Island.
Predeceased by his wife, Marion, grand-daughter, Tara, parents Michael and Nellie and sister Maureen. Left to remember Gerry and his love are his five children, Patrick (Marti), Marcy (Mark), Nancy (Kevin), Stephen (Alexandra), and Dan (Mary Anne), eight grandchildren (Lee, Stephanie, Laura, Svetta, Liana , Michael, Corey and Sachin), eight great grandchildren (Ayden, Evan, Teah, Cieran, Jake, Jackson, Harrison and Cooper) his brother, Brian, a sister-in-law, Lorelei, and many nieces and nephews – especially Donald, who gave up his time, home, and car to help in the care of Gerry (and Marion) for many years.
Dad was someone who got the joy out of the simple things in life. He valued a yearly self-made calendar from Ken Rodonets, activities with the Bains each year, walks on the beach, drives and holidays with Marion, the tour of Ireland when he was able to meet extended family for the first time, Liverpool, Flyers, Coyotes, and Raider games, the talks one-on-one with friends both young and old, and, of course, his stories.
What he cherished most were his grand children and great grand children. They brought him such joy over his years without Marion. All the pictures, the videos and the video chats gave him such joy. Always remember his love for you and the example he set as a man of honour and principles, but never judgement.
Go now Dad and be with Mom, Tara, and all your friends and family including Gramps, Willy, Dr. Lesack, Mike Rodonets, John Kusmack and many many others.
Thank you to Dr. Feng, and to the nurses and staff at Willingdon Care Centre in Burnaby – especially Mae, Nicole and Ryan (although he got your names wrong many times). They could not have taken better care of Gerry. Special thank you to Dr. Peter Mukheibir who has been both a doctor and a friend to our entire family.
Gerry’s life will be celebrated in the summer when family and friends can gather.
