George Herbert Powell Obituary
Obituary of George Herbert Powell
It is with thanksgiving to God for a life well lived, and with sadness for our loss, the family of George Herbert Powell announces his peaceful departure from life on earth to life in the Father’s house the morning of Saturday, 23 November, 2024.
George was born on 6 January 1933 in Woodstock Ontario, the son of George Delbert and Charlotte Louise (Caley) Powell. He was predeceased by his first wife Audrey Ellen (Abbott) Powell in 1994, and second wife Bertha Louisa (Pike) Powell (nee Barrett) in 2015. He always said that he was truly blessed to have had two wonderful wives. He was also predeceased by his son John Philip Powell in 2021, his sisters Jacqueline Gardiner (1999) and Margaret Trezise (2017), brothers William “Bill” (2006), Laurie (2023) and Charles “Chuck” (2024), and parents George (1971) and Charlotte (1987) Powell.
George is survived by his son G. Edward C. (Beverly) Powell and their children Graeme (Catherine) Powell, Andrea (Liam) Taylor, his son John P. Powell’s children Maria Powell (Matt Eagles), Joshua (Jescinda) Powell, and Allison Powell, as well as their mother, Anna McCarthy Powell; great grandchildren Michael and Nicolas Powell, Isla and Finlay Taylor, and Anne-Marie Eagles; stepdaughter Barbara Pike, stepsons Howard (Bonnie) Pike and James (Margaret) Pike, step grandchildren Andrew (Alison) Pike , Lauren Billard , Alison (Darren) Dunne , Lesley Pike (Paul Thistle), Katie (John)Dunphy, and step great grandchildren Phoebe Bailey, Louis and Camren Pike, and James Thistle. He also leaves behind a large circle of extended family and friends.
When George first became a grandfather, his first grandchild Graeme had some difficulty pronouncing Grampa and began calling him Boppy instead. George embraced this name and from that point forward his grandchildren, great grandchildren and many friends and neighbours adopted this term of endearment. Boppy was so proud of his family and cherished every moment spent with them.
George graduated high school from Woodstock Collegiate Institute. As a teenager, he served with the Oxford Rifles until joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in June 1952.
He served as an RCMP Officer in various communities in Newfoundland, as well as Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario, returning to St. John’s NL in 1977. In 1983, his final posting was to Vancouver, British Colombia, as Officer in Charge of Administration and Personnel, retiring in 1988 as a Chief Superintendent. George and his wife Audrey decided to move back to St. John’s in 1990 to be closer to their family.
A lifelong learner, he completed a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science and Economics) from the University of New Brunswick in 1965, a Master of Arts from Carleton University in 1971, and learned to speak and write French so that he passed the Public Service Language Knowledge Examination
Wherever he lived, George was involved in his local church and community. Throughout his 30 plus years in St. John’s, The Crossing Church, formerly West End Baptist Church, and its close-knit community played a prominent role in his life. In retirement he was an active member of the RCMP Veteran’s Association, including service as a lay Chaplain. In addition, he served as president of The Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada, and with the Canadian Bible Society, the St. John’s and area Council of Churches, and the Religious Social Action Coalition of NL, whose focus is the elimination of poverty, including a living wage for all. He also volunteered with other community organizations including Cabot Habitat for Humanity, Festival 500, Chancellor Park, St. Thomas Church and as a volunteer visitor at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary.
Blessed with a green thumb, George loved working in his garden and trading gardening tips with others. He had a great love of music. His first wife, Audrey, was an accomplished pianist and George a clarinetist. This love of music was passed on to his children and they often performed as a family at church functions. George was a funny, kind, generous man who made friends wherever he went and helped others wherever he could. He cared deeply about others and always showed an interest in their lives. He made a point to keep in touch, through chatting to neighbours on his daily walks, connecting with the staff at Sobeys on his weekly grocery visits, and through scheduled phone or video calls with RCMP Veterans and family and friends who lived away. He also made sure to keep up to date with loved ones through Facebook and WhatsApp.
Visitation will be at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. St. John’s, Friday, January 10, 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A memorial service will be held at the Crossing Church (formerly West End Baptist Church) 314 Topsail Road, Saturday, January 11 at 11am. Instead of flowers, donations in George’s memory may be made to Canadian Baptist Ministries, cbmin.org, 7185 Millcreek Drive, Mississauga Ontario, L5N 5R4 or The Gathering Place, kindnesswanted.ca, 172 Military Road, PO Box 1761, St. John’s NL A1C 5P5.
For those unable to attend in person, the service will be livestreamed and a link will be provided here and on the main page of the Barrett’s Website the day of the service, January 11th.
