In Loving Memory of Frederick Roy Chapple (Fred)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Fred on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
Forever loved by his wife Joan (nee Gregory). Survived by his sons with his first wife Nancy (nee Cooper); Richard (Angela), Steven (Maritess) and by Joan’s sons; Mark (Sharon), David (Dianne). Loving grandfather of Scott (Clo), Jeffrey (Emily), Hunter, Josh, Tom and Max. Predeceased by his siblings; Eleanor (Gordon), Margaret (Michael), Dorothy (Murray), John (Shirley) and survived by his brother-in-law Fred (Barbara). Uncle to Bruce, Doug, Nick and Karen.
Fred was born in Toronto to Edith and Roy Chapple on August 12, 1940. He delighted in riding the trains as a boy up in the engine with his Dad. He began singing at an early age in the choir at Victoria-Royce Presbyterian Church in Toronto. He continued to sing in choirs throughout his life – Zion and Highland Hills United churches, Highlands Festival Singers, Highlands Male Chorus. He served on committees and chaired boards at church, Highway 35 Assoc., Festival Singers and Highlands Opera Studio to name a few.
Fred graduated from Western Tech where he had made lifelong friends. He played snare drum in a high school military band and was active in swimming and badminton.. He enjoyed scouting and proudly attained the rank of Queen Scout. From high school he went on to Ryerson and followed his interest in Chemistry. His long and varied career began as a research chemist in the CIL paint lab, and led to marketing for Sears. He moved to Carnarvon and his beloved 12 Mile Lake to own/operate Four Seasons Store and trained as a butcher. After 20 years he turned to Real Estate and became a sales agent for Remax. Wherever he worked, his joy of life and positive outlook made him well loved.
He loved hard work and sports and hard work and new adventures and hard work and travel. But most of all he loved his wife and his family. When Fred began dialysis he became a member of the peer support group for the Canadian Kidney Foundation and offered encouragement and support to people about to begin the fearful home dialysis journey. His battle with failing kidneys and heart disease was long and difficult. He faced his challenges with dignity and good humor and a determination to live.
Special thanks to the doctors and staff at the Peterborough hospital. Whether it be the ICU, Heart Unit, Home Dialysis Unit, Medical Unit or Stroke Rehab his cooperative, sunny nature was embraced and he was treated with skill and loving compassion to the very last moment of his life. We are also grateful for the outstanding support received from many cherished friends, particularly Wayne and Bonnie Black and Don and Jessie Pflug.
He will be remembered for his love of life, sunny nature, quiet ways and kindness to others. We will so miss that twinkle in his eye and ready wit.
Friends are invited to visit family at the Highland Hills United Church, 21 Newcastle St., Minden, Ontario K0M 2K0 on Saturday, April 5, 2025 from 12:00 o’clock noon until the time of the Memorial Service to Celebrate Fred’s Life at 1:00 pm. Reception to follow at the church (downstairs). Cremation has taken place.
