It is with enormous sadness and disbelief that we announce the peacefully passing of Evangeline (Vange) Cecelia Tucker (nee Connors) on January 26, 2025, at the Health Sciences Centre, age 69. Originally from St. John’s, Evangeline spent the past 45 years living in St. Phillip’s.
Predeceased by her husband John in May 2022; her parents Timothy and Patrica Connors; brothers Tim, Fabian, Michael, and Bartholomew; sister Valerie Currie; brother-in-law Roger Currie; father-in-law Alec Tucker and mother-in-law Mary Tucker; brothers-in-law Robert Clarke and Kevin Ryan; family friend Doug French, and sisters-in-law Pamela Macpherson and Evelyn Clarke.
Evangeline leaves behind her son Carl and wife Tanya, daughter Nicky and husband Paul, and cherished grandson Alec Byrne; brothers Brian (Heather) and Patrick, sister Patrica Gosse (Peter), and sisters-in-law Lorraine Connors and Lana Ryan, brother-in-law Wade Tucker, along with a large circle of nieces and nephews and extended family.
Many friends and neighbors mourn her loss, especially Lorraine Walsh, Florence Whelan, Debbie Hollett, Maureen Haines, Judy Tucker, Diane Pollett, Lynn Cleary, Sandy Tucker, Eleanor Tucker, and Robert Lehr.
Known for her friendly and caring nature, Evangeline had a gift for connecting with people wherever she went. She genuinely enjoyed conversations and getting to know others. Her love for family was paramount, and she devoted much of her life to raising her children and maintaining a household, often single-handedly when her husband was away for work. Evangeline instilled values of kindness, generosity, compassion, empathy, humor, strength, and wisdom in her children and grandchild.
Her grandson Alec held a special place in her heart. “Nan T” adored everything about him and was immensely proud of his intelligence, creativity, storytelling abilities, and artistic talents. She even had the house remodelled to create a room for Alec and took great care to ensure it was decorated and outfitted just right.
Affectionately known by various nicknames, including “Blanche” and “Lilly” (by her husband), and “Mudder,” “Mud,” “Muk Chuk,” “Mommy Dearest”, and “Mother” (by her children), Evangeline had a great sense of humor and enjoyed playful banter with her family.
Evangeline was known for her caregiving nature, always ready to help family and friends in need. Her unwavering support allowed her husband to spend his final days at home, a testament to her love and dedication.
While sweet and kind, Evangeline could also be a force to reckon with. She was strong-willed, opinionated, and would fiercely defend her beliefs and loved ones when necessary. Her deep understanding of people and the world around her was a hallmark of her character.
Evangeline had a passion for current events, enjoying news broadcasts and open-line radio shows. She loved music and dancing and found joy in simple pleasures like a cup of tea, the daily newspaper, and crossword puzzles. Her green thumb was legendary, and she took great care of her plants. An animal lover, she doted on her grand-fur babies, Mishka and Queenie, showering them with treats and affection.
Despite not being fond of school in her youth, Evangeline possessed a remarkable memory for dates, names, and telephone numbers. This skill served her well during her time at the telephone company. She later worked in retail and homecare, returned to school to complete her GED, and attended the WISE program. She also completed a hairstyling program at Lemoine’s, always embracing new experiences and opportunities to interact with people.
Mom had lots of living left to do and we are devastated that she is no longer with us. We are thankful she enjoyed good health and independence all her life. We are shocked that this brief illness that came to light in December 2024 would take her away from us. She spent about 10 days in hospital, undergoing three surgeries and just could not get better. Her children were at her side when she quickly and peacefully passed away. She left this world the angel she was, and may she soar to Heaven and reunite with our dad and all the loved ones we have lost.
Thank you to everyone who offered support, calls, texts and visits to mom and the family recently. Thank you, Jenni. Thank you to the all the nurses, doctors, and staff in Emergency, 4 North B and ICU of the Health Sciences Centre. Thank you, Jill, Monica, Patricia, Tina, Katie, and Dr. Clayden, to name a few. Thank you, Fr. Francis Roche.
Cremation has taken place. Mom will have visitation at Carnell’s on Wednesday, January 29 and Thursday, January 30 from 2-4 pm and 6-9pm and on Friday, January 31, from 10am-12 noon. Inurnment to follow at St. Phillip’s Anglican Cemetery on Friday, January 31 at 1pm. Flowers gratefully accepted.
