Gordon 1929 2025 résidant dans la province Nova Scotia pour le détail des funérailles
Elva Mary (Howard) Gordon passed away peacefully on May 6th, 2025, at Valley View Villa, Riverton. Born in Massachusetts, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Elva Howard.
Elva is survived by her three children: Barbara (Terry), Eleanor, and David, and her grandchildren: Kathryn (Fraser), Matthew (Erin), Jennifer (Charles), Jeffrey (Cat), and Kara (Devyn). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Edric, Hannah, Gabriel, Aven, Oliver, Felix, Arlo, Ocean, Bode; siblings: Eleanor and Harry (Mary); brother-in-law: Jeremy, cherished relatives: Dodie (Yvonne), and Amy; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Foster; her sister, Barbara; and her cousin, Claire.
Elva graduated from Nova Scotia Normal College as a teacher, and her first position was in the rural community of New Lairg, Pictou County. She also braved the cold of Labrador when she accepted a position in Goose Bay. She stopped teaching full time after her marriage so she could be at home to raise their three children.
Elva married Foster in August 1955. Their favourite place was the family cottage in Black Point where countless memories were made. In summertime, if she wasn’t at the cottage, she could be found in her garden or tending to potted flowers on her veranda.
Elva loved to skate. She spent her Saturday evenings at the Stellarton Rink, where her hockey player son struggled to keep up with her stamina. She also had the time of her life when visiting Ottawa and skating on the Rideau Canal.
She was happiest surrounded by family, especially if the gathering was at the cottage where the door was always open and the tea kettle was always on. She took pride in baking her famous pound cake for her children and grandchildrens’ birthdays, and Christmas dinner at the Gordons’ was always a delicious affair. She found the humour in everyday life and was quite hilarious when she got going.
While her children were growing up, Elva was on the Executive Board for the Minor Hockey Association and rarely missed a game. She was also a member of the inaugural Stellarton School Band Parent Auxiliary, who initiated the Spring Fling celebration which continues to this day as Stellarton Homecoming.
Elva loved reading and singing to her children, grandchildren, and eventually great-grandchildren. The joy that they brought her was evident to anyone who knew her.
A special thank you to the staff of the Oak Lane wing at Valley View Villa for their kindness, care, and compassion.
Visitation will be at H. W. Angus Funeral Home, 256 King St, New Glasgow on Saturday, May 17th from 1-2, with the service immediately following. Donations in Elva’s memory may be made to Pictou County Roots for Youth, the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, or a charity of your choice
