It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Elizabeth Spence, at the age of 64 years of Niagara-on-the-Lake left us on May 21st, 2025, at Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines, peacefully, surrounded by her immediate family. Elizabeth shone her beautiful light on everyone she met and left a calming, inspiring and fun loving attitude in all her roles as a life partner and best friend to Duncan Spence for more than 40 years, mother to their children, Madeleine (Matthew) and Martin (Laura), a dedicated volunteer to countless school and community programs and as a much beloved Yoga teacher and class instructor.
She began this life on April 13, 1961, born to Marta Videla de Braga (1936-1981) and Rodrigo Braga (1933-2011) in Mendoza, Argentina.
Elizabeth and her family emigrated from Argentina to Toronto in 1975. Spanish being her mother tongue, she quickly learned English at Bloor Collegiate in Toronto’s west end. After another year back in Argentina they returned to Canada in 1981, and she began an 11-year career working at the International Money Market division of the Royal Bank in downtown Toronto. In 1983, she married Duncan, and after living in Scarborough and Mississauga they settled in Oakville in 1991 where they welcomed their two children, Madeleine and Martin.
While Elizabeth was getting involved in many school and community activities, she graduated from Sheridan Colleges’ Yoga Instructors course in 1996. A passion for yoga & spirituality, she taught across communities in Oakville & Mississauga, even returning as a teacher at Sheridan College, guiding students through Yoga Fundamentals.
Teaching, learning and building relationships came easy to Elizabeth. Whether as a Spanish teacher, a volunteer in her children’s music programs & in the community orchestra, she always served her community with a smile or a joke. Helping others was second nature to Elizabeth, as she eventually volunteered with the ‘Next Step’ program in Mississauga supporting those recovering from neurological and physical trauma.
Elizabeth enjoyed new connections made since her move to Niagara-on-the-Lake in 2020 through teaching Yoga at the NOTL community Centre, NOTL Town Hall and joining the Evergreen Singers and volunteering at the HUB supporting Mexican and Jamaican people working in the surrounding vineyards and fruit orchards.
In keeping with Elizabeth’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at Morgan Funeral Home, 415 Regent St. Niagara-on-the-Lake, on Monday June 2, 2025, between 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A service to celebrate Elizabeth’s life, for close family and friends, will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday June 3, 2025, at 12pm. Following the service, friends and family are invited to remain at the funeral home for a time of fellowship, refreshments, and continued sharing of Elizabeth’s memory.
