Elizabeth’s Obituary
Elizabeth Anne Dexter passed away suddenly at Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville on Tuesday, January 14th, 2025. Born on August 28, 1950 in Hantsport, Nova Scotia, the daughter of the predeceased John and Anne Dexter. She leaves behind her son, John Best, of Rosedale, New Brunswick (partner Emily Shapiro and grandchildren Alice and Francis) and daughter Rosalind Best, of Alberta, as well as her sister Charlotte Dexter, of Oglivie’s Wharf.
Elizabeth attended Kings Edgehill and Windsor Regional schools, graduating from the N.S. College of Art and Design in Halifax. After obtaining her teaching degree from Acadia University, she was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years at both Kingston and Dwight Ross Elementary schools in the Annapolis Valley. In her job, she was stern and direct yet looked upon her students warmly. Often, she’d mention certain ones long into her retirement.
Her passions were gardening, painting and the ocean. She tended large gardens at every place she lived and especially loved delphinium and iris. At the onset of spring, she would find her gardening shears and start hunting for pussy willows, and may flowers, or any sign of life at all to make into a bouquet. From April to December, home was decorated with arrangements meticulously put together.
In her younger years she painted watercolour landscapes, animals, and still life. Later, she turned to oil and acrylics. Recently, she had an art studio overlooking the Bay of Fundy. The ocean called to her. Growing up in a yellow house overlooking the Minas Basin she never strayed far from saltwater. She returned there completing her life in Oglivie’s Wharf. Almost every vacation was spent on the South Shore or near the Bay of Fundy. Her family with her, she was always teaching them to hunt for beach glass, sand dollars, mermaid’s purses, and drift wood sanded bare by the ocean.
Elizabeth’s passing was sudden and has left a huge void in the lives of the people who loved her. At a later date, her ashes will be cast into the place she loved the most, overlooking the Bay of Fundy. A reception for friends and family will be held at that time.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, 1-855-825-3448. Online guest book may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
