In Loving Memory of Edwin Wiebe September 26, 1935 – January 14, 2025
After a long and fulfilling life devoted to Jesus, his family, and service to many people, Edwin Wiebe passed away peacefully at Grace Hospice in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 89.
Most of you know him as Edwin, Dad, Pastor Wiebe, Uncle Ed or Grandpa.
Born in St. Joseph, Manitoba, to Henry and Susan Wiebe (née Sawatsky), Edwin was the youngest boy of five siblings. He grew up on the Prairies surrounded by the strong family values that shaped his life and ministry.
In 1963, Edwin married the love of his life, Olga Storozuk, at the Central Alliance Church on 364 Furby Street in Winnipeg—a place that would later hold deep significance in his ministry. Together, they built a loving home filled with faith and joy, raising five children who carry on his legacy of love for Jesus, family and people. Before entering full-time ministry, Edwin worked at Oakley Optical and Ramsey Matthews in downtown Winnipeg, crafting prescription lenses and custom frames. Though skilled in his trade, Edwin’s heart belonged to the ministry, and he answered the nudge of the Holy Spirit with unwavering commitment.
Edwin’s pastoral journey began as a youth leader and assistant pastor, but his passion for serving others soon led him to plant churches across Winnipeg. He established congregations at 205 Hespeler Avenue and 1425 Manitoba Avenue before ultimately returning to the very church where he was married at 364 Furby Street.
There, he faithfully ministered until his retirement in 2015. Edwin was more than a pastor; he was a mentor, a spiritual father, and a friend to countless people. He was a man of prayer and a diligent student of the Bible, living a life of simplicity that belied the depth of his character.
Edwin’s unique sense of humor and the “Edwinisms” we all know left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
When he wasn’t making a huge pot of soup or canned jam to feed the 5,000, he could likely be found studying the Scriptures, praying or creating a new sermon to preach on Sundays.
Edwin modeled unwavering faith, compassion, and humility, leaving behind a legacy of strong values and a life well-lived demonstrating the love of the Father to many.
Edwin’s greatest joy was his family. He is lovingly remembered by his favourite sister Doris Schmeichel; sister-in-law Irene Wiebe; his children: Charleyn Dawn Day, Lyla Thomas (Dan), Tamara Siemens (Duane), Dale Wiebe (Anne), and Tracylee Wiebe; his grandchildren: Cherish Picklyk (Dennis), Cayla Robillard (Collin), Checed Picklyk (Alexis), Dallas Thomas (Hannah), Tyler Thomas (Saki), Gordie Thomas (Anita), Laura McDonald (Graham), Braden Siemens, Caleb Siemens, Joel Siemens, Daniel Wiebe (Leticia), Joshua Wiebe (Madison), and Trinity Wiebe-Tonn; and his great-grandchildren: Micah and Luke Thomas, Isabelle and Daniel Thomas, Sofia McDonald, Finnley Siemens, Iris Siemens, and Henry Robillard.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Olga; or “Olya” as he lovingly called her, his parents; and his brothers, Abe, Elmer, and Henry.
While Edwin has fallen asleep in the Lord and we honour his life today, He would want everyone here to rejoice in the reality of the Resurrection, Christ’s conquering of death and the beauty of the life of the age to come.
This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ he spent his life sharing.
A celebration of Edwin’s life will be held at The Wave Church, 364 Furby Street, Winnipeg, on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 11:00 am, with his son, Dale Wiebe, officiating. Interment will follow at Thomson in the Park Cemetery (Interment is invitation only).
For your convenience, there is also an option to view the service live online using The Wave Church Winnipeg YouTube channel.
A viewing will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 7:30 – 8:30 PM at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg.
The family expresses their gratitude for the support and condolences during this difficult time. A sincere and heartfelt thanks also goes out to the staff of St. Boniface Palliative Care and Grace Hospice Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Wave Church in honour of Edwin’s legacy of faith and service.
