It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, Dr. Roger Holden, at his home in Red Deer, Alberta, at the age of 80.
Roger was born on April 23, 1944, in Smethwick, England, to George and Helen (nee Woodward) Holden. Despite the challenges of growing up in post-war Britain, Dad’s resilience and passions led him all over the world, with most of his treasured memories being made in Australia and Canada.
The pursuit of knowledge was a profound passion of our Dad he obtained his Bachelor’s and Master degrees in Psychology from the University of Manitoba, and completed his PhD in the same discipline at the University of Melbourne.
From there, he enjoyed a long and prosperous career as a Clinical Psychologist; employed by Correctional Services of Canada, serving as an expert witness at various Courts of Queen Bench across the Prairies, and in private practice, where he helped countless Central Alberta families respond to, address, and cope with the complexities and challenges of family life.
Reading was another passion, and our dad took pride in his library, which started when he was a boy. He instilled this passion and curiosity in all of his children, and emphasized the importance and gift that the learning process itself offers. Our dad was also noted for his absolute sense of silliness; Monty Python and Douglas Adams work was a staple.
Roger is survived by his children: Kim (Amy); Robin (Anne); Rachel (Teage) Roy; and Katie; his extended family: Kate (Robert) Cook and their son, Alex, of England; Clare (Jerry) Warnock and their sons Matthew and William, of the USA; Chris (Sandra) and their daughter Emily, of Alberta; his granddaughters Sophia and Alexis Holden; and his grandson, Aiden Roy. He is also survived by his ex-wives; Bunny Braley; and Donna (Gene Aquilini) McNichol; ex-mother-in-law Elsie McNichol; and many friends and colleagues across the world.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Nicholas Holden of England; nephew Scott Holden of England; and ex-father-in-law Roy McNichol of Alberta.
In accordance with our Dad wishes, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to a charity of one choice; our Dad was a long-time supporter of the Central Alberta Humane Society; The Canadian Cancer Society; the MS Society of Canada; the Canadian Wildlife Federation; and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
We would like to thank the many nurses and doctors that took care of our dad in his last months, and for the many friends that rallied around our family in our time of need.
