Dr. Richard Lloyd Lister
November 15, 1938 – March 12, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Richard Lloyd Lister. Richard, affectionately known as Dick or Dickie, was a distinguished leader in the fields of metallurgy, chemistry, and business but more importantly a loving friend, husband and father. Born in Toronto, Ontario, on November 15, 1938, Richard was the son of George Lister of Leeds, England and Shirley (Moldaver) Lister of Brantford, Ontario.
Devoted husband to Deborah, his beloved partner in life, Richard’s family was his greatest achievement. He was a proud and supportive father to his sons, Scott and Kipp, and his daughter, Courtney. As his children grew, he embraced every new addition to his family. He was a warm and loving father-in-law to Megan, Lindsay and Trevor. His greatest title was that of « Zaidie, » a role he embraced wholeheartedly. His grandchildren, affectionately known as « The Great Eight, » were his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Richard had a deep love for the outdoors. Since the age of 6 he spent his summers on Clear Lake at Camp Pine Crest. He was never happier than when he was at his beloved cottage in Muskoka, surrounded by the beauty of the lake and the towering pines. Whether paddling across the water in his canoe, taking in the stillness of a misty morning, Muskoka was one of many places where his heart felt at home.
Richard was passionately involved in the thoroughbred horse racing community. He was a dedicated owner and breeder of many successful horses that competed across North America, leaving a lasting impact on the sport he loved. His commitment to excellence and sportsmanship in horse racing was widely respected, and his contributions to the community were felt by many. Just like his father, he found great joy in the thrill of the track, the beauty of the horses, and the camaraderie of the racing world.
Richard was an accomplished scholar, earning his B.A.Sc. in 1961, M.A.Sc. in 1962, and Ph.D. in Metallurical Engineering in 1964 from the University of Toronto. His extensive career included serving as President and CEO of Zemex Corporation, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. He was also a Director of a number of mining companies. Throughout his life, Richard made significant contributions to the mining, metallurgy, and chemical industries, publishing numerous technical papers in his field.
Richard was a man of intellect, integrity, and warmth, known not only for his sharp mind and leadership but also for his deep kindness. He exemplified generosity with the giving of his time, counsel and spirit. Whether at his home in Toronto, cottage in Muskoka or poolside in Aventura, Dick welcomed everyone with wide open arms.
Our hearts are broken, but he leaves behind a legacy of excellence, wisdom, and love that will be cherished by all who knew him.
