Dorothy’s Obituary
In Loving Memory of Dorothy Jean Parsons
July 25, 1924 – January 2, 2025
Dorothy Jean Parsons of Melvern Square, passed away peacefully at home in her 101st year, surrounded by love and family. A devoted mother, grandmother, homemaker, and faithful servant of the Lord. Dorothy lived a life of grace, compassion, and unwavering faith, leaving a profound legacy for all who knew her.
Born on July 25, 1924, in Walbrook, Nova Scotia, Dorothy arrived minutes before her beloved identical twin sister Doris. Together, they grew up on the family farm, the children of Laura (Smith) and Joseph Anderson. Alongside their siblings Pauline, Bill, Marie, Hope, and June, they were raised in a home where love for family and faith in the Lord were foundational values. Dorothy often fondly referred to her grandmother Blanche as one of the kindest people in her life.
From an early age, « the twins” entertained with their sweet harmonies, sharing their voices at community churches, festivals, and gatherings. Their love for music continued throughout Dorothy’s life, with joyous family singalongs often centered around her piano playing. These heartfelt sessions frequently culminated in the twins’ moving rendition of « Whispering Hope. »
Dorothy was a talented homemaker whose kitchen was the heart of her home on the farm. She took great pride in the way she completed her daily responsibilities, ensuring everything she did reflected her care and dedication. She was renowned for her home-baked goods, including delicious pies, warm breads, and homemade jams that brought joy to family gatherings. She was known for her thoughtful “Graces” at family meals, often reading from index cards she had lovingly prepared to give thanks.
She enjoyed her view from their hillside farm as the day unfolded in front of her. She found immense joy and gratitude in the beauty of nature and God’s creations. She often reflected on their wonders with awe and thanksgiving, a sentiment that inspired those around her to see the world with the same reverence.
Dorothy was predeceased by her much-loved husband in 2015, Raymond John Parsons, whom she has missed each day since. Dorothy’s partnership and support to Ray over the years was tireless and admired by all that knew her. She is survived by her eight children – John, Bruce (Shelley), Melanie (Richard) Brown, Paul (Christine), Craig (Laurie), Lynne (John Elliott), Susan (Michael) MacArthur, and Raymond (Lori). Her legacy lives on in her 22 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, all of whom she treasured deeply. She is also survived by her sister Hope (Gerald) Atkinson, sisters-in-law June (Burgess) Landers, Joan Smeltzer, Eva Parsons, brother-in-law David Parsons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy’s love of learning began early and continued throughout her life. Known for her encouragement and wisdom, she inspired others to strive for their best, whether by guiding her children’s studies or nurturing a love of education in her grandchildren.
Her life was a testament to the beauty of simplicity and the power of relationships. She found joy in family gatherings, and in offering unconditional love to everyone around her. Dorothy’s faith in the Lord was unshakable and guided every aspect of her life. She was a quiet yet steadfast example of resilience, fairness, and devotion. She was guided by a belief in a loving God and a life to come. To her family, she was a rock, a hero, and a leader whose influence will be felt for generations.
It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her memory will remain in our hearts as a source of strength and inspiration.
To Pam Giffin, we are grateful for your patience and tenderness shown to our mother. The family would sincerely like to thank Dr. Michelle Saxon and Senior Home Care by Angels for their help and enabling our mom to remain at home.
A special thanks to sisters Melanie, Lynne and Susan for their unconditional care and to Lynne’s partner John Elliot for his support to Lynne over these past years.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the Kingston United Baptist Church. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the remarkable life of a woman whose faith, wisdom, and love touched so many.
