Mrs. Dorothy Bickley of the Ridgewood District passed away at the Innisfail Health Care Centre on February 14, 2025 at the age of 86 years. Dorothy was born in Red Deer on May 27, 1938 to her parents Oswald and Edith Moore. She was raised and lived in the area until her passing. She resided on the location that her grandfather came to in 1919. Dorothy took her schooling at the Ridgewood School for eight years, grade nine at Balmoral #3 and Red Deer Composite for her senior years, now known as Lindsay Thurber. Dorothy worked after school for three years at the Alpha Condensery until her marriage to Neal in July of 1959. Dorothy was now a farm wife, doing everything from raising their children, tenderly caring for yard, gardening, feeding and milking the cattle, by hand, back then, all the field functions from seeding to harvest. She made time to drive school bus for a period.
Dorothy was involved in many district functions, ball for twenty years, from picnics to Christmas concerts, she was active in W.I. for fifty years up until two years ago. She was a member of the local history book committee of “Sods Shacks and Wagon Tracks”
Dorothy and Neal were avid travelers from coast to coast in Canada and Alaska to Los Angeles. They also went on numerous cruises through the Caribbean to the Panama Canal, the West Coast from San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta and up to Skagway, Alaska, as well as Australia, New Zealand and Fiji along with Thailand looking for shoes.
Dorothy followed all her kids in their activities. Graduated to the grandchildren’s schooling achievements and sporting endeavors of all seasons. She was also a loyal follower in curling season, and never missed watching the Scotties, Brier or the Grand Slams.
She leaves behind her devoted husband Neal, of sixty-five years of marriage, a true testament to their unbreakable bond. Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her children, Brian (Carol), Chris (Bonny), and Arlene (Gord) James who will deeply miss her, as well as her grandchildren, Graham Bickley, Shannon (Cameron) Ilcisin, Tess Bickley, Shelby Bickley, and Mitchell and Kyle James will forever cherish her memory.. She is also survived by her brother, Ted (Pat) Moore, her brother, Patrick (Bev) Moore, her brother-in-law, Keith Fleming and her sister, Gladys Carriere and brother-in-law, Delbert (Wanda) Bickley and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her son Stephen, her parents Oswald and Edith Moore, sister Audrey Morphy, and brother-in-law Mike Carrière, John and Ruby Bickley and step mother-in-law, Annie.
A Celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at Ridgewood Hall (37160 Range Road 10, Red Deer County) on February 28, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. If you are unable to attend the Celebration of Life, go to www.heartlandfuneralservices.com on the Home Page click “Livestream” just prior to 2:00 p.m. Within twenty-four hours the service will be posted on Dorothy’s page on our website.
