Dorothy Anne Risling (nee Wentland)
November 22, 1944- January 10, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dorothy Anne Risling (nee Wentland), on January 10, 2025, at the age of 80 years.
Dorothy was born on November 22, 1944, at the Royal Alex Hospital in Edmonton, and was raised on a small farm near New Sarepta. She met Ralph in 1961 in Hay Lakes, and they were married on June 6, 1964. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Dorothy and Ralph enjoyed the country life and lived on acreages in Ellerslie and Looma throughout their life together, and then back to city life in Edmonton for most of their retirement years.
Dorothy worked with the provincial government as a key punch operator, various private companies, and as a teacher’s aide. She also did volunteer work for a few years with Fultonvale Minor Hockey as the treasurer. However, having large gardens and a very active family, she took a temporary retirement from the 9-5 routine, and took over the 24/7 responsibility for looking after the home and hectic schedule of her son’s Dale and Rod.
The home was busy with hockey, softball, volleyball, basketball, curling, and various other activities which provided hours of commitment and entertainment. The love of watching her sons carried on as a grandma through her grandchildren, as they were also active in hockey.
Vacations with family and friends were important to Dorothy. The earlier years involved numerous fishing trips and later on, numerous trips to the Caribbean, Hawaii, and cruises. Dorothy and Ralph later became snowbirds where they spent time in Mexico , Arizona, and California. Over the past 40+ summers they have made numerous trips to Osoyoos.
Dorothy was an incredible listener. She was patient, and supportive. She never judged nor spoke negatively about anyone. Her positive, supporting attitude is something those she touched will always cherish.
Her other passions included: gardening, puzzles, reading, playing cards, long walks, bike riding, crafts, and of course, watching the Oilers.
Dorothy’s remarkable spirit will live on through her family: her husband, Ralph Risling; her children, Dale, and Rod; her daughter-in-law, Wanda; grandchildren, Blair (Abby), and Chyenne; and her great-grandchildren, Scarlett, Sawyer, Juliet, and Jude. Dorothy is also survived by her brother, Phillip (Sylvia); brother-in-law, Edward (Helen); sisters-in-law, Mary, and Evelyn; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, William and Olga Wentland; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gabe, Lyle, Helen (Finley), Rita (Mickey), Elizabeth (Phillip), Madeline (Floyd), Emily, and Donald.
A special thank-you to Dr. Witharana Dinesh and the home care nurses who came to our home for Dorothy’s care. Also a big thank-you to the numerous nurses at St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital.
Cremation has taken place, and the funeral service will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, 210 Haddow Close NW, Edmonton, AB, on January 17, 2025 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy’s honour to an organization of your choice.
